heck, Id say about 95% of my photography education came from POTN and a solid portion of it from right here in the Sports Section. I start at Western Kentucky for Photojournalism in another week, transfering as a Junior to follow this path because I know its what I want to do...

And to think a year and a half ago I was asking what bokeh was, and how aperture worked! *smacks self* odds are Ill get my ass STOMPED by the other students, but being the underdog often has its advantages I guess...

so seriously, thank you all for everything.

But you have a POTN Edumacation!!! You'll do the stomping!

In a few short weeks you'll be telling us what braindead zombies your fellow students are!

go give em hell!

I have to agree with CDS here. I've been looking at different photography institutes and also exploring the options locally(hardly any)-and am amazed with what these schools are showing off as their students best work. Other than a couple major institutes' websites I was shocked at how much low calibre work was making 'gallery' pages and 'exhibits'....I mean...I guess you might need that piece of paper to get the foot in the door, but I wouldn't want to be associated with a lot of the schools out there-and i'm not even good yet.
This type of atmosphere is one of the best to learn in IMO-other than that you can really only learn by doing. You can hear all the theory in the world, but without actually reacting to the environment you find yourself in....it's all just text.

I know a few people from TAFE (form of tertiary education over here) who have less knowledge than what I've gained by trolling the web over the last 6mths. Like anything it really comes down to how much you want something, those with the most natural talent, glorified accreditations or financial backing arent always those who succeed.

All the best with your education, you do some great work and sound keen enough to do the stomping:cool:

The problem is a lot of teachers only know what they have been taught at college and not gained much real world experience. They teach only what they were taught.

haha...thanks for the encouragement, some of the student entering the program with me are very experienced, so I feel a little tense and would rather try to play the underdog car as best I can. They tend to "brag" you might say, so I am hoping their big heads dont let them see me comin from behind until its too late! :) thats the plan at the moment at least...hehe

ah, yes its actually why I didnt finish out the Digital Media program at my current University, but the Photojournalism school I am going to has very experienced teachers and students...it's still what you push yourself to do in the end, but it doesnt hurt when you teacher used to be the former photo-editor for National Geographic or something just off the wall awesome like that?

The coolest part about getting to go to photojournalism school looks to be the workshops though

Good luck, and again- there is a lot to be learned online here, and also depending on what type of photgraphy you're into(this is in the sports section so I'm assuming sports) check out www.sportsshooter.com I hope someday to be worthy of a membership over there. A guy can dream, can't he?

haha, our young Will is already a registered member of SS, heck he has been for some time now and quite deservingly so, unlike most of the newer members over there.

well it's good to hear that your moving in the direction that you want to go Will and at a good school where you will have others pushing you to improve. i wouldn't worry too much as you know you have the abilities and real world experience to give them a run for their money. if you have time, keep us posted on how things are going and don't forget to share some work here.

Good luck at Western Kentucky Will. You'll knock their socks off, there's no doubt about it...

In the unlikely event you're ever stuck for inspiration, a quick trawl through the posts on ss.com or POTN will certainly get the creative juices moving again I'm sure.

Keep postin' here as well... I'm looking forward to seeing your input into those workshops... you'll blow 'em away!

thanks, and dont worry, I'll probably post way more than usual once the ball is rolling in those photo classes. Although being new in the program, they kind of limit you...but Im good at working the system generally, and being older than the people I am going in the program with might get me on that arena floor faster than they say is allowed. We will see.

Yeah, I see some strong work, much stronger than mine...but some of the student profiles on there I wonder what they were smoking when they were choosing their shots to post.

I'll def be keeping you all posted though...might be a few months before I get to do too much cool stuff, but I am a whore that takes my camera everywhere I go, so even if Im not assigned I have something from the events.

haha...SS and POTN have been the biggest pillars in my "education" so far...who needs a book to teach you anything when you see the real world right here in places like this?!?! psh...hehe
