WHY OH WHY OH WHY
why is it that wen you get a shot damn sharp theres always something you do that messes it up....... (here's the offending shot)

It happens to me all the time. Either I do it, or the bug does it. This shot is awesome,(wing cropped and all) very sharp and the composition is great. Great job.

Now that is a sharp image without any duobt you have resolved all the lines of resolution that lens has here, Why does this happen like this, I think it's so you will be frustrated and try even harder :)

I like it.

My recent experiences in this area generally have involved the wind picking up, and taking my subject right out of frame.

Thats a great shot, despite the missing wingtip :-) !. Love the detail shown in the cropped version !

Wow, you've got some superb images there. Extremely sharp and colorful. Composition is great. Unfortunately, as you said, there is always something that messes it up. I can't agree with you more on this. I don't know how many times I took a shot, which otherwise be a great shot, but just because of one minor thing, the pics needed to be trashed. The missing wing tip of your shot isn't that bad at all considering what else could happen. Anyway, it's still a superb shot.

Absolutely fantastic Alan! That 100% crop is awesome.

Don't worry too much about the wing tip, it doesn't detract too much really. If it really bothers you and you don't mind knowing it's not "real" then a bit of photoshopping will easily fix that. Hope you don't mind, but I just whipped up a quick mock up - you could do something much better if you have a couple more images showing more of the bottom part of the flower. Let me know if you don't allow edits and I'll remove.

edits are fine by me........

i thought about doing a little ps trickery on it but havn't had the time so far.........

your mock up looks great...
you cloned the bottom of the flower from a rotated portion of the right of the flower by the looks of it :) (i've got a good eye for these kinda things)

Been there, done that, hated myself for a week, then moved on.

Quite a stirking image. Maybe you could get sombody to publish it at the bottom of the page, then no one would have a clue it was actually your fault...:p

Alan,

Your photos are fantastic, and far far better than the 0.001mm depth of field which is all I've ever managed to achieve so far . Could you tell me what lens/extension tube/filter setup you actually used to get your shots?

Regards

JR

Could you tell me what lens/extension tube/filter setup you actually used to get your shots?

for this one I used the ef50mm 1.8 mk2 with a 31mm jessops extension tube....
shutter speed 1/200sec, F10 and iso 100.... with flash (with a mad homemade flash reflector)

to get half decent DOF on macro shots i've found that you need at least F/10 (the lower the aperture value the better your DOF will be........ If i took this shot with the av at F/1.8 i'd get the 0.0001mm DOF you mentioned..........

do a few experiments yourself and take 1 at as high an av value as your lens will go ie 1.8............ then take the same shot at F/22 (you'll see what i mean instantly)

the drawback to this of course is that less light gets into the lens so you either have to drop your shutter speed, up the iso value or use a flash.... (i'd say i use flash for about 80% of my shots.............. even in glorious sunshine

Amazing amount of detail in the crop. well done! I like the ps of the first photo as well, although I don't think it was necessary.
