I'm not sure I really understand the concept of Bokeh. Do either of these qualify? This is highly subjective. I would say your first post comes close and your second misses the mark.

More than just an out of focus (oof) background (or foreground) I think the oof area should not be recognizable and add to the over all quality of the picture.

In the first photo I find the oof background distracting (here we are in the subjective area). In the second I think it is just an oof background and not bokeh.

I would hope others would correct me if I have missed the mark.

Hindsight makes me wish I would have changed the angle of the shot better so that the backround wasn't so dark against the bird's head. But that's hindsight for you lol. I liked how the foreground ended up too. Being new to having a DSLR I'm still kinda "feeling out" depth of field versus the point and shoot I'd been playing with for a while.

BTW the lighting in the pet store here sucks, I kept to pretty low apetures all day :( Don't get me wrong, it worked for some shots. Others though ran a bit softer than I really wanted too.

i'll be honest i did up the saturation levels "very little" prior to saving for POTN.
I am also unsure if the source was from a raw or a jpeg, when originally shot, as a rule i tend not to do to much PP, so i would say the colours are about 80-90% accurate as far as saturation goes. They were especially beautiful tulips lol

The camera is on a monopod held in his hand.

Perhaps the lens is on a monopod? All I see is the camera with the straps and air below it (or bokeh.)

He was using a Nikon 400 2.8 with extender.
I have never seen so many large lenses used at a motorsport event before.
Many guys carried 500 4L's or 600 4L's.
