Jim you have a great copy of a great lens! :D

Mr. Clean,

Thanks. I agree...this is indeed a great lens  I got it about 3 weeks ago and it has been on my silver dRebel 350D ever since.

It does it all: landscapes, portraits, closeups...great color & contrast...fast & quiet focus...and, sharp, sharp, sharp IQ

Very simply, it is when the background of a photo is blurred and the forground is sharp

tsaraleksi
9th of October 2006 (Mon), 22:15
Wow. That is unreal. What was in the background to produce that?!

It's a track, grass, and bleachers. I was suposed to be shooting a football game :D.

WRONG!

Bokeh refers to the QUALITY of the out of focus points, not the fact that the background is out of focus.

From Ken Rockwell's site:

Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light.
Bokeh is different from sharpness. Sharpness is what happens at the point of best focus. Bokeh is what happens away from the point of best focus.
Bokeh describes the appearance or "feel" of out-of-focus backgrounds and foregrounds.

How about this?
Not quite. The bokeh on that shot is bad because the out of focus points still have hard edges. The transition from a blade of grass to another blade of grass should be smooth, and not defined.

It should also be pointed out that a completely smooth, creamy (and obviously OOF) background doesn't illustrate bokeh. That's just OOF - something any lens can do.

You need to have "some detail" in the background with which to demonstrate bokeh. Most obvious are specular highlights and point sources of light - they should be clean, round discs of light of varying softness without exhibiting rings or halos. The more aperture blades you have, the smoother the aperture and thus the smoother the bokeh is. You don't want to see pentagrams (like on cheap 5-blade lenses).

OK, regarding colour selection for "Goose Bokeh", this is how you do it:
(1) Find a place where geese congregate, typically a lawn, which borders a roadway/street travelled by cars and other vehicles.
(2) Place yourself as close as possible to the geese in a sitting or kneeling position, so that the road is preferrably perpendicular to your shooting line.
(3) Now, you gotta be fast with your camera:. focus on one goose...as soon as a vehicle enters the frame in the background, fire !
(4) Red vehicle, red bokeh. Blue van, blue bokeh. Yellow truck, yellow bokeh....etc.

Hehe. Your right, no trick. Just patience.

Speaking of which I jsut got back from waiting over 10 hours to get a pre-order for the PS3. Can't wait to do it all over with some of the friends I made on nov 17th (we want a couple more.) The profit I'm making off these babies is definitley paying for the two lenses I just ordered and maybe a super telephoto and ultra wide + flash :D.

No. Swans are more like a moose.

Duck is more like a goose.

I had a chance at moose bokeh Saturday afternoon in VT. Naturally, the camera was back in the cabin... Just as well, even if I had the camera in-hand, that sucker was movin' when he heard me creeping up the trail.

How about a moose, non-bokeh? (I suppose I could pp some bokeh but really, I prefer it natural...anyway on our vacation this little, okay large, girl was just calmly waiting for her photo so I had to strike fast...before I upset her)

couple abstract uses of bokeh... a 8 or 9 blade aperture, or a wide open aperture makes or breaks these...

I like the second one as well. The first one has that optical illusion effect that you get when you take pictures of screens (I've done it before too). If you take a picture of a screen such that the screen is close to parallel with the imaging plane and there is enough contrast with the background, you can see little red dots flashing...

I love the framing of that shot. I have a shot that is quite similiar, and with some cropping would be sort of similiar except for bokeh and all, unforteuntly it was with a not so sharp 70-300 APO macro lens, so I am not inclined to do a lot of cropping. Not to get OT but I used to post on head-fi, infrequently, and now not at all. That place helped convince me to buy some Panasonic Dolby Headphones. One kick a$$ set of cans.

Not back to your regularly scheduled bokeh.
