thanks I don't think it's too hard.. manual focus & you just have to find the camera position where the circle of confusion works just right.. here's one where I singled out out a beach ball from it's surroundings.. not the greatest bokeh but meh :)

That's my keyboard. It's called the g15. I used it when I was a gamer (not gmaing anymore, too much into photography.) It has a blue LCD screen and the keys light up blue along with some of the buttons. I am trying to get rid of it so I can get a more compact keyboard so I have more space on my desk.

Aero, just out of curiousity, isn't it difficult to set up a shot of somebody with a 300mm lens? I could see maybe 200, but 300 seems a little excessive. Regardless, the shot is very nice and the lighting is great.

Many thanks.

It is really quite easy actually (honest). A monopod helps a lot. And of course you need a little bit of room....though really not as much as you'd think (it's not that much longer than a 200...and only a bit more than twice as long as the 135).

I'm really quite stunned with what the 300/2.8 IS can do for portraits. I'm very much looking forward to taking some with it again in the future. And to think I bought the lens for shooting sports.

I like your shots too with the 300mm, it looks great!

Also, kudos to another member here in florida!! How is the weather a few miles south?

Good point! Those were shot on a FF camera. I definately wouldn't want to use the 300 for portraits on a 1.6x crop, that's for sure.

Thanks, Surf....sun just broke through the fog about an hour ago. Feels like it might actually be cooling off again. Passed some beautiful flowers on my run through the Old NE section of Saint Pete this morning and I am hoping to go back to shoot them with my 100 macro and MT-24EX when I get out of work at 4.

Cheers!

This is the best bokeh I've managed to achieve.

I think this is a fantastic shot.

On a side note, I shot a similar shot one time and someone in a Flickr group one time tell me that this was not bokeh because there was no definition at all to the background image.

Technically that is just an OOF background. For it to be bokeh it should have some resemblance of something. Since bokeh refers to the OOF highlights and there are no highlights in that shot, it isn't really bokeh.

Exactly...

A blur of a background isn't bokeh. It's just OOF. Any lens can do that.

You have to have "some detail" to demonstrate proper bokeh.

Yours is a great shot! I think the comment about bokeh is one that many, including myself has regarding the definition of bokeh. I've debated this before so won't go that route again, but with most people here bokeh just means the ability to handle out of focus areas well. I think this is the simple and incomplete definition, but I love your shot! Absolutely perfect.

With bokeh you usually see what would be detail in a small aperture shot as bright circles and stuff, right?

The 24-70 is that big? I'm planning to buy it, but never realised it was that huge! Got another photo of it more in focus beside say a measuring tape?

I think the 24-70 and the 20D was the equipment used to take the picture. The camera in the picture is a Rebel. The lens looks like a Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX.

Something like this then? I was laying on the ground to take this shot. That is grass and pine straw in the background.

Exactly. You want round blurs that are nice, even and smooth. No rings/halos, no pentagons or hexagons (as produced by lenses with only 5-6 blades, for example).

Yeah, that's what I thought.

How do the blades effect the shape and detail of the bokeh though? You can see the blade when you use DOF preview on your SLR while looking at the front element of the lens, right?

The more blades in the aperture, the smoother and rounder the opening. OOF highlights will look circular rather than pentagonal (as is the case with 5-bladed lenses like the Nifty).

Yes - if you hit the DoF Preview button and look into the lens against a light background you'll see the aperture.

Canon L's typically have eight blades, thus producing better bokeh.

No offense, but these are all examples of bad bokeh. Look at the second image here. Toward the bottom the leaves have a distinct outline around the leaf itself. The transistion from the leaf to the background should be smooth. There is also some very bad CA in these shots.
