When highlights are OOF they are called specular highlights and, as ^^^ mentioned, they should be circular.

Without these highlights, you're right. Bokeh should be smooooooth.

Lani Kai

moophus

correct me if I'm wrong but at wide open, all lenses produces circles. it's only when you stop down down you start seeing effects of the aperature blades.
If you hit the aperature preview button at different aperatures you can watch it in action and at wide open, the blades don't even come out.

In2Photos

Best yet! No it isn't. The outer edges of the rings should be slowly fading from bright to dark (in this shot). The outer edges are brighter than the center of the circle, as if a ring was drawn around a circle. This is a classic example of bad bokeh.

^^^^^^^

Isnt that bad bokeh? isnt it supposed to be a smooth background instead of being dotty?
It is bad bokeh, but not because the bakground is "dotty". These are called specular highlights and can be an example of good bokeh if they have smooth transitions.

highlights should be circular.
The shape of the highlights doesn't always equate to good or bad bokeh. Also, the shape is dependant on the source that created the highlight in the first place.

Here (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-04-04-04.shtml) is a pretty good read on bokeh.

True. Stopping down a lens with a low number of aperture blades (like the 50 1.8 ) will result in non-circular shapes.

What lens created this? This would be an exmple of bad bokeh. If you look at the specular highlights in the background the edge is brighter than the center. The edge should fade from bright to dark.

Yeah. I wasn't all that happy, I was using my friends Rebel XT and 50 1.4. Shot was at f2.8. I think the 50 is a pretty sharp lens and has nice bokeh, but you need to stop it down quite a bit (maybe around f2?) and I think that I can never use a Rebel again after last night (My 30D feels so nice in comparison, easy aperture and ISO changes are great.)

Yea, you are all right... The upgrade from the 350D to the 30D was one of the best things i ever did. It really is a great camera.
The XT however is a great camera too, i will miss it, since i learned on it. I wish i could have kept it and had it as a backup, because after getting the zoom, i switch lenses a lot, and that i dont like cuz of dust/dirt, and time spent, you can miss a picture.

Hopefully someday soon i can get a 1D, or a 5D.... lol

I'd love full frame myself, although even a 5D is huge compared to my 30D.
I wanted a 300D as a second body for when I wanted something smaller and didn't want to switch lenses, but the controls just kill me.

Yes, im used to the size/weight/layout of my 30D now, and i was using my friends 300D last weekend, and i was suprised at how the 30D layout is so much more smooth, and logical i think.

In about a year when it is time to upgrade again, i would like fullframe too. Hopefully i can have something along the lines of
5D + 24-105
30D + 70-200

That is my goal at least, we will see how much money i have with college and all! lol

Hehe. Yeah, I don't know, the screen seems to be very inaccurate at showing off what you have taken compared to the 30D, and the idea of having to go into menus to change your ISO, and having to hold a button and use a dial to change your aperture is so awkward.

It has to do with the highlights in the background. Even light in the lil circles. If the edges are brighter on the circle it is not good, brighter in the center is not good, and if lines in the background are doubled it is not good. There is a more technical explanation found on the web, but do not remember where the link is. In2Photos is pretty knowledgeable on the topic...

From everything I've ever read/heard about bokeh, it's not just out-of-focus lights in an image. Any image that has OOF parts has bokeh. And good bokeh is determined by how pleasing the OOF areas are to the subject. Bad bokeh is when the OOF areas distract your eye from the subject. Maybe I've been misunderstanding this but I don't think so.

There are some excellent images posted here!

Yeah, external flash makes all the difference. When you bounce and use the flash properly, you get natural looking colors (not that harsh stuff your speaking of), and can shoot at much lower ISOS.

Have tried for ages trying to think of what it means :)
Bokeh is a term used to describe the OOF areas of an image. A lens that produces good bokeh is one in which the transition from one area to the next is smooth. The best way to see this is in a specular highlight. A lens with good bokeh will NOT have a hard defined edge. See more here (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/bokeh.htm).

It has to do with the highlights in the background. Even light in the lil circles. If the edges are brighter on the circle it is not good, brighter in the center is not good, and if lines in the background are doubled it is not good. There are some excellent images posted here! Almost correct. If an image has an OOF area that is one color there really is no bokeh as there is no transition to be judged. Otherwise you are correct.

And since the 100 macro is popular lately I have an image to show.

oooooooooooooooooo.......can you recommend an external flash, that isn't too pricey? My hubby might have my head on a platter if i spend anymore right now LMAO but i definitely should get one since i like the low light....high ISO....hate my built in flash....and I'm definitely having issues with dark pics and a lil' blurriness, as you can see! thanks for the help!!!!!!! this green newbie really appreciates it!:D

Ditto... 430 EX speedlight

For extra money the 580EX is nice!

I shoot high ISO's even using external flash... Well 800, but that is high for a 300D. Higher ISO's allow more background and ambient to be in the image.
