Hermeto, give it to me straight. Does this image have good bokeh? I know the leaf cluster is slightly OOF on the edges. I was fighting a strong wind and it made focusing a challenge (even in MF)

Yo guys, I am not an expert, I am just trying to clear up something that I’ve learned mostly on these pages!
Let’s not forget that bokeh, first and foremost is not measurable.
It describes more quality than quantity of back/foreground blur..
I’d call this a nice bokeh, but that’s just my personal impression.

It’s amazing how many people confuse shallow depth of field and good bokeh!
These two things usually go hand in hand, but they are not the same..
Having one does not necesserely means that you have the other too.
oh man thank God the cannuck said it first lol ive been wanting to say the same thing man
Ditto
I've wanted to say that myself for some time now. I'm not an expert by any degree so I've haven't piped up. I think some people need to read up on what bokeh really is. Google it, search here on POTN, read these. But there is alot of confusion between Bokeh and OOF from a shallow DOF.

Bokeh indeed describes the out-of-focus areas.
But ya gotta have out-of-focus areas, so wide aperture shots tend to demonstrate much more bokeh than shots well stopped down.
Bokeh is the quality of the out of focus areas, and tends to be better with those lenses that ever-so-slightly dim the rim of their CoC's, but not to the point of an obvious bright spot in the middle of the CoC! Those that ring their CoC's with bright usually have bokeh that is described as "harsh," "double-line," or "distracting." There's examples of that in this thread.
If you enjoy Real Bokeh Discussions, look around for the Leica f/1 50mm discussions: Noctilux (A.K.A. Nauselux, A.K.A. Nocti-licious!), where bokeh is described as "swirly," or "wonderful:" both sides of the same coin.
There are plenty of people (especially those that got their start before extraordinary high speed films were commonly available) that don't like out-of-focus areas in photographs; 3D shooters are a good example, where out-of-focus areas are considered contrary to the guidelines. These same people usually roll their eyes when it comes to discussions such as these, expecting their lenses to render what they want as they see it, and not worrying about what isn't supposed to be seen, trusting their tools to do the job of which they are asked.
Watch the DVD of "Paper Moon" sometime. Not a drop of bokeh, even in the night scenes. Listen to the commentary on "why."
Personally, I like it. Broad out-of-focus areas are a cheap (well, f/1.2 lenses aren't cheap- perhaps easy) way to differentiate pictures taken with more capable lenses from those taken with point-and-shoot cameras with poor or dark optics (the Contax G series excepted- nice bokeh there!), as those cameras/lenses tend not to blast much out of focus.

This thread is sweet!! Man, and to think, all the time when I took my photogrpahy courses they went on and on and on about keeping your shots in focus and that bad focus will ruin a lot of shots. Hunh, what did they know?
I guess being out of focus is cool, so long as it's well done :)

Yes, and? it's smooth and nearly indistinguishable rendering of the background/ background light. ie bokeh.
Most definitions of bokeh define it as the 'pleasing quality of out of focus areas' Either way it seems somewhat silly and pedantic to pick apart the definitions: if bokeh is the quality of the out of focus area (kind of how a grade is the quality of work in a classroom setting) then good bokeh is simply nice looking out of focus areas, yes?

I always thought bokeh was smooth rendered background that defines the subject, the subject in your picture defines itself, see how the picture of the rose makes it stand out more and pop out more because of the smooth bokeh, thats not shallow DOF its just good use of bokeh

Just wipe everything off the outside of the camera and take it in for service once a month or when it dosnt work right is all i do :)
Have to know where to stand if you dont want to get hit too much.

I doubt some people here as true photographers. A true photographer will get a little ditry to get the shot. Not all of us are willing to stand in the ocean or lake to get the shot, but getting a little dirty is no big deal for me. Today I was covered in dirt and mud, but extremely happy with the shots I got.

Thanks and yes it was done in all natural light (early morning in the shade). As for post processing I used Adobe Lightroom playing with contrasts. Resized and sharpened for the web.

Its a sandy / muddy shoreline with some larger shingle , I waited till the tide going out coincided with the setting sun more or less in front of me and the sun glinting off the (still wet shingle) provided the points for my OOF circles .
