That shows off the lenses great contrast, saturated / vivid colors, and shallow DOF. Nice work, and cute dog too!

Well I haven't done too many of such selective-focus work, and really should get down to making more of these pictures. But out of the very limited photos I have, here's a sample from the Voigtlander 125mm f/2.5 SL macro lens:

This ain't the best, but it's some of the most.

35mm f/1.4, wide open, with the best bokeh challenge: Near focus subject with distance being nearly infinity, and complicated.

Notice the double-line (Ni-sen). Also notice how folks (rightfully) rave about the lens. There's always more than one factor at play.

Haven't looked through the 167 pages of this thread but can I just point out that 'bokeh' refers to out of focus specular highlights, and how they appear given the characteristics of the lens and its aperture blade configuration - not just out of focus backgrounds.

Not to say that there aren't some lovely shots here but most of them don't particularly show bokeh.

I disagree. Bokeh does not specifically mean OOF specular highlights. Specular highlights are the easiest places to determine the quality of the OOF areas because they appear as bright spots that should fade on the outside (good bokeh) or have a dark ring on the outside (bad bokeh). Have a read here:

I've been experimenting with my EF 50 1.4 USM that I recently purchased and must confess I think it has issues. It's not quite as sharp as I expected. I'm not sure if I am just paranoid or whether I need to send it back. The Bokeh is dreamy but in the focal range it seems lacking in sharpness. But hey, I'm an ameture!

The photo was taken wide open at f1.4 and I've done nothing to the image other than resize. As far as a difference between stops? I shot from a tripod at every stop up to f22 and could see very little difference in sharpness, only slight variations in exposure.

It certainly doesn't appear sharp in that picture. Does it have a plane of sharp focus at all? Very pretty background. Sharp or not, it's pretty.

Good question. I think I am going to try shooting some 2D test patterns. At least then I will know if I am on plane or not. Thanks for the comment. I do like the way the flowers in the backround look.

Ok,

So I've read many threads and more pages of this thread than I should admit to... and I'm still confused! Is this good... or bad, bokeh?

I don't really like this guy but his article on Bokeh isn't bad. Worth a read and will answer your questions.

Mike,
Thanks for the read. After reading, and looking again, I'm going to say that it is pretty good bokeh. I'm not seeing sharp edges, but there is definitely identifable spherical shapes. But then again, I could be sooooo wrong!

It isn't the worst I have ever seen.:) There are a few highlights in each of the first three photos that have some sharp edges. These shots are pretty small and harder to tell. If you look at the original at 100% magnification it might be easier to discern. All in all though they don't seem to take away anything in the image which is a good thing.

The best advice I can give you though is to not get caught up in worrying about your bokeh. If you know the limits of your glass then you can make any picture work for you.

Just to add to that....

I am no way an expert, but to me, good bokeh is something complimentary to the image. I guess that adds a certain bias to the definition of "good bokeh". IMO, good bokeh shouldn't distract you from the image, but help your eyes ease back on to the subject.
