Beauty fades

A few weeks ago this was a vibrant, beautiful Hibiscus.
But like everything that has life, time has eventually worn it down.

The stamen has started to droop along with the petals.
The flies and ants, harbingers of death are now feasting on it.
Just behind this lies a series of blooms ready to unfold.

Life begins anew

This is very eye-catching bokeh! I like the way the strips of leaves faintly show in the OOF BG, but what's with the ISO? Why was it set at 1600 when you had room to use a shutter speed of 1/2000?

Good question. You see, when I am in Brasil, I routinely drink lots of tasty coffee. Me + caffeine = ssSShhHHaaAAkkKKyyYY HANDS!!! So I was needing something on the order of 1/250-1/320 shutter speeds to avoid any disappointing shots, and ISO1600 was the best fit for a camera without 1/3 step points available (its a cheap little XT). I was just taking random off-hand shots in Aperture Priority mode under the canopy up in the mountains when I got this one. I got lucky and my fiance happened to have her face illuminated by a break in the canopy, and so the camera adjusted the shutter speed to make the exposure correct. I can't remember off-hand what the metering mode was set to, but it was probably center-weighted. Make sense?

You can see in the background some dark and light spots created by the random light-casting prevalent in the mountain-side wooded areas in Teresópolis.

hehe, I can see where you'd need something fsat, but with a 50m lens, camera shake really isn't all that big a deal. I can see where you'd have difficulty moving in and out of shadows like that, so I guess it kind of makes sense. I just remember that the fear of using iso 1600 was always in my mind when I had an XT, which is really why i question it. Most of the time i would prefer to endure slower shutters 1/30 or less to go without flash and still keep the iso at 800.

Yeah, the ISO800 is really ideally the farthest into static-land that I like to go, but I hate blur worse than noise! Plus, I already invested in neatimage, and it does a fantastic job with a little fine tuning. Actually that photo looks great at 11x14 (adorama was running 11x14s for 1.99 at the time), so I got really lucky!!

Every time this thread comes back to the top and I see most of the photos I can't help but think that out of focus backgrounds are usually not that interesting and are not, by themselves, bokeh. Yes, the point has been argued in the thread and it looks like opinions differ, but to me if you don't have the specular highlights all you're pointing out is that the background is out of focus, which you probably did in order to highlight the main subject anyway. And it's boring! Why have a separate term for something that appears in every photo with a short dof? Why not just call it "out of focus?"

So that I'm not all talk and no action, here is some real bokeh. And I'd be curious to know what you think of the bokeh quality here. Sigma 30 1.4 on 30D.

I am one of those whom believe that you can show bokeh without having specular highlights. There are a few throughout this thread. But I do agree that it is easier to show bokeh with specular highlights and that not all of the shots here show bokeh (probably even a few of mine).

As far as your shots go I think the bokeh is pretty average or neutral. There are no real outlines of the highlights but no real gradations from center to edge either. It is pleasing to look at though, not harsh so I would lean more towards "good" than "bad".

Thanks Mike for the appraisal. I think the bokeh in shot #2 is simply blown out as they were bright lights strung across a black sky. But yeah the fountain drops look like the "technically perfect, artistically compromised" example on Ken Rockwell's site. I like the way it looks but wonder if these, too, have too much of an exposure differential against the black sky as they were pretty brightly lit from below.

For #1 I agree that they could be toned down just a tad with maybe a little fill flash for your beautiful subject.
