Taken this weekend at the gun range with a friend's D70 using new 18-200 lens.

Did you use sharpening in PP? It has that sharpened look in your bokeh. I like the sharpened look just not so crazy about what it does to bokeh. What do you think?

The pixelization is from converting it to such a low res web image.

Maybe but looks more like sharpening to me. I wasn't trying to make accusations just bring up for discussion what sharpening seems to do to my bokeh. I am sure if I selectively sharpened it would be ok:)

What the h@!! is bokeh! It doesn't sound like I really need to know it but since it's thrown around here a lot, well, I might as well ask.

A little tongue-in-cheek here but I really don't know what it means/stands for.

Thanks

Actually, both of the pictures you are referring to display bokeh. You can argue as to the quality of it, but by definition, any out-of-focus area may be referred to as bokeh. The blurring of the background has adequately highlighted the outline of the pens in the cup, so it served its purpose of removing (to some degree) the distracting elements of the background to help the viewer key on the subject.

But I think that bokeh of Helios 85mm/1.5 at f/1.5 is good-looking really.
The majority of lenses draws a neutral bokeh as the Adobe Photoshop makes Gaussian blur Filter. Helios has own drawing. Faded intellect of computer or brush of the impressionist, what do you choose?
Certainly, bokeh of Helios looks better on photos 300x200mm and more.

Helios at f/1.5 has a sharp center and the soft borders if you use FF-camera. Sometimes, it is good on portraits but it depends on the idea.

Bokeh is the irrational characteristic, I like bokeh of Helios 85/1.5, but yuors opinion may be in another way.

You seem to have an amazingly sharp 40-2 for your subject to be so snappy at f/1.5! Well done, and nice lens! ;)

You sure that was shot at f/1.8? I have a 100/2 (brother of the 85) and when I shoot it at f/2 the aperture blades are out of the way, causing the bokeh highlights to be round/elliptical. This photo distinctly shows the 8-blade pattern.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't think I've ever seen a lens that didn't have a circular aperture wide open, and I've previously owned the 85mm f/1.8...

Haha, dude, you don't even wanna know. After my fiasco with Canon and then having to return my 1st 20d then wait for a 2nd 20d and getting my hair cut. I just haven't had time to shoot.

But stuff happens, eh? :D So how's your family?

Yes, it would've been better if the snail actually came out of his little home, but they don't do that when the sun is shining bright...

But the main thing that caught me on this picture was not the snail (the subject), but the background, which displays a lovely set of colours.
