I love how the narrow depth of field turned out here, well at least at the left side of the image. Should've taken some more control over the lightning (sorry, spontanous portrait), some strange yellow hue got reflected on the left side of his face, which was kinda sloppily removed. The non-web version looks better, as the sRGB became over saturated and I'm too tired to color manage it.

I disagree. The definition of bokeh is "a photographic term referring to distorted out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens". Th image does not have to contain a point in focus.

Also, this thread is supposed to have images AND lens info people.

...bokeh does not require in-focus photos, according to some sources...

Bokeh (from the Japanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language) boke ぼけ, "blur") is a photographic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic) term referring to distorted out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera) lens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_lens).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh#_note-0)

Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light.

I believe you should have said "I don't like the bokeh", not "It's not bokeh". It's clearly bokeh. Bokeh quality can be discussed in relation to the photo, but you can't change the definition of what bokeh is.

A sharp subject and a blurred OOF background is a good example of subject isolation and is attractive to most people's eyes, but the existence of a sharp subject does not speak to the subjective quality of the portion that is OOF.

Um no. Just because an image has nice bokeh doesn't make it a keeper, and likewise just because it is a keeper doesn't mean it has nice bokeh. But as seen by Futura's shot an image does not have to be in focus for people to like it. There are other attributes to an image.

Sorry, but I had to add the second quote.

I think these are both the same. Rockwell states... "Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light". He didn't say there wasn't or had to be an in focus primary subject..:D

Personally I don't mind either way.... a pleasure to the eye is just that.. a pleasure and if someone was sharp (pun) enough to spot the photo opportunity then okay in my book.

The true definition:
Webster's New Millennium™ Dictionary of English (http://dictionary.reference.com/help/wmde.html) - Cite This Source (http://dictionary.reference.com/cite.html?qh=bokeh&ia=wmde)
Main Entry: bokeh
Part of Speech: n
Definition: a Japanese term for the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of a photographic image
Example: The bokeh, or quality of the blurred image in the photograph, was described and discussed.

My opinion from everything I've read bokeh is the out-of-focus areas created by the lens diaphragm blades. The more blades a lens has, the rounder these areas will look. In my opinion (right or wrong) a silky smooth background, which looks great, is just OOF and not true bokeh.

Hee Hee! I think his description was apt though but ..... bokeh exists to help hi-light another focal point in a photograph. i.e. So the eye isn't distracated from a good portrait shot bokeh exists in the background (or forground in still life).

It is the same principle applied in the art world. To make a feature stand out.... subdue everything around it.

Now if Warhol had said it.... we would all have listened....:lol:

Rudi, do you have any of that series without the toy? It almost looks like a Lamaze ad as is, adorable baby though!

I have another one from that day's shoot, one that I have online, anyway. Same camera/lens combo:

Wow, now that's sharp...darn $3500 lens...:p

My Latest using preset takumar 200mm f3.5 at f8 believe it or not.
look at that dreamy creamy bokeh. focus was obtained by eye and the focus confirmation chip adapter. those 50 year old lenses still pack a wallop.
