Thanks for the response, Shuko. The thread it is hanging by is clearly visible in that second photo you've posted.
gixxer_kidd: I love that second shot (especially how you composed it to be easy to tell it's from a wedding). First shot isn't too bad either (200 f/2!)

oh wow, i thought you just went to a really nice zoo and abused the compression of telephotos to keep our intentions on the subject captured.

I live in Hong Kong so Broneo is only a 3 hr flight. Hiking in the jungle finding wildlife is much more fun than a zoo. Much harder though especiually withe the 150-500 BIGMOS and a 70-200f4is + monopod on your back with all the water.
Is worth is though.
I love monkeys and got this one aswell hiding in the trees. Same lens. Havnt had time to remove the tail at the top and brighten up his face which is needed.

my goodness...only a three hour flight? Borneo is a dream come true for me. i have a heavy history with carnivorous plants and that area harbors some of the most extraordinary Nepenthes one could ever cross.
one of them would be Nepenthes Rajah which is notorious for drowning baby monkeys in their pitchers of intoxicating digestive fluids. ;)
p.s.
while the specular highlights are sloppy in this shot, i still find myself envious of the opportunity to capture a shot of one in the true tropical wilderness.

Lying on the edge of the pond with camera nearly touching water with the 14mm almost at the min focusing distance (less than a foot). I have few shot at MFD and f2.8, but they werent as nice.

easy - close focused subject, distant BG = shallow depth of field, even on a wide angle.

Actually Bokeh isn't a real word. It's not a description and neither is it clear what it actually represents. Some say it's blobby out of focus highlight circles...others say it's the quality of the out of focus background. Who really knows but every one seems to have an opinion about it?
Spectacular out of focus highlights are generally regarded by UK judging panels (RPS ect) as ugly, unsightly, distracting and simular in content to lens flare. It's generall frounded upon, although there are always exceptions to the rules. They seem to prefer smooth out of focus areas. I have some great "Bokeh" lenses but i find the Bokeh blobs to be distracting too. The whole point of a smooth background is to blend away but put a few blobs in there and it competes with the main subject.
It's all very subjective and completely ambiguous. But then again, it's not a real word to start with. It's a "sound a like" phonetic from a Japanses word that has no direct translation into English.

Thanks.
Central composition isn't something that should be shyed away from becuse others call it the death zone. Circular geometric objects can work well in the centre of an oblong frame, it adds to the feel of geometry. Which is particularly important with slighly abstract images. Adstraction works best with simple composition. But that's pretty much the only time that I'd use it. Photographic Rules aren't really rules, they are opinions and guide lines. The rule of thrids should be blindly applied in the same way that central composition shouldn't be blindly avoided. The question is this: does it add or take away fron the image? If I moved this Fennel to the left or right then it wouldn't look right and appear contrived.

Just the first shot I took of one of my new pet quails. :D
They were from a market...£2 for a pair, no one wanted them, my dad felt sorry for them so now we own them and they are living happily in an aviary with some canaries and zebra finches. :)
Yet to be named, so feel free to make suggestions. :P

Hey Martin, great shot. The people in the background are a bit distracting so I thought a tighter crop would benefit the shot. Hope you don't mind, what do you think?

Dispatchermike21, what lens did you use for this wonderful shot? I see it was shot at 300mm. Besides the BIF, I love what apears to be water droplets just behind the bird; great depth and pop.
