I disagree..

To me its not only ugly its very distracting in the way it takes a minute to find the subject and then once you find the subject the background keeps competing for your eyes attention. I don't think with this subject matter it works. If you were trying to create a lot of tension and confusion then the background could be successful but not in this case.

There's 'some' bokeh there. The whole point of the thread is bokeh - why would you post an image in here if the bokeh itself isn't the main emphasis of your photograph - especially since it's asking for "your best" in the title?

What actually makes good bokeh in a photo? Is it the glass? appeture? I apreciate wider appetures help blur the background, but what makes one bokeh look nicer than the next?
I notice some pics have a hexagonal-ish pattern on everything regardless of original shape, but other shots are almost completely smooth in the pattern. Is this where the amount of appeture petals or curved petals are doing their thing?

Is there a PP way of making bokeh?

its all subjective really. some people like the smooth creamy bokeh, some like the busy ones. the number of aperture blades makes a difference but also each lens has its own characteristics that produces different bokeh. over at FM, theres a 'bokeh' thread in the alternate gear forum that shows alot of bokeh examples from canon lens and other unique manual focus lens. some of those lens produces some sick bokeh.

It's one lens element from a broken Powershot G7 I dissected a few weeks back. It seems to work like a fisheye when you get the focus right. I managed to get most of my living room in the frame with a 500mm lens from four feet away. :D

superb bokeh :)

Proof that boken is very subjective. While I like the shots, I find the bokeh to be harsh. Similar to my nifty, I feel the bokeh to be disruptive and disturbing, not at all smooth or pleasing.

I am not judging the photos or the photographers that posted here. In fact, I really like the shots. I just feel that this is the boken that is less than pleasing to me.

In addition to lens design, I feel boken is greatly impacted by BG business and distiance to subject. A step forward or backward could change the boken significantly.

That Olympus bokeh is superb. How much does that lens run and can the mount be adapted to a 5d2?

This isn't nearly as good as anyone elses on here or a great bokeh, but I love the 'dreamy' look especially since she is trying to sleep.

its definitely a love/hate thing. specially with manual focus lens. alot of them have some unique bokeh. that would be the only reason why I want more MF lenses. but the ones i want cost too much to play around with lol. the olympus was cheap enough for me to try though.

Future Blues, i got the Olympus Zuiko 50mm F1.4 (theres multiple versions with different lens coating depending on the serial #). i got mines off ebay for about $100. olympus adapter for EOS is pretty easy to find on ebay as well. i just picked up an Helios 44-2 58mm F2 lens on ebay for 20bux using M42 adapter. we'll see what kind of bokeh it can produce :D

Cheap, and yes.

Just get a Olympus OM to EOS mount converter, and a used Zuiko 50 F/1.4, probably runs at $100 or less for a decent one. MF only, however, and you need to stop down the aperture manually too, before taking the shot. It certainly is one of the better MF fast 50s - sharp from F/2, unlike many other ones which only get sharp by F/2.8.

The bokeh, however, clearly is a personal thing: it is not my favourite in the bokeh rankings.

Kind regards, Wim
