Look at the white disks made by out-of-focus specular highlights in the image. The disk have edges that are brighter than the center. Most of the longer Canon lenses are neutral. Sonnars produce out-of-focus highlights that fade at the edges.

I show some examples on my online article about bokeh:

http://www.rickdenney.com/bokeh_test.htm

Rick "noting that the 1.4 isn't nearly as bad as the typical consumer-grade Canon zoom, such as his plastic-mount 35-80" Denney

well...as you can see the A75 isn't very good for this kind of thing, and until I can afford a 350d and a decent lense, I won't be able to do much.

That is my best bokeh, but not really the clearest or best in focus image I've taken :(

Here's another photo of my wife's feet... now, I DON"T HAVE A FOOT FETISH. It's just that these photos show some of the best examples of "creamy bokeh" taken by me. I have to get some of anything other than my wife's feet.

This photo was also taken with the 50mm f1.8 MkI @ ISO1600. This photo was processed through Noise Ninja to clean it up a bit and then Photoshopped to adjust it a bit. The original photo was quite noisy, but that can be expected with the 10D @ ISO1600.

Hi, Thank you.

The wall behind the subject is a creamy white colour and is about 12-15 inches away, I bounced the flash of that. To the left in the room is one lamp (60 watt) about 10 feet away (the shot was at night) but the flash is the main light here... I also manual WB the shot to the lamp in the room to the left.

But I have been very impressed on how the flash when bounced can perform, find playing with the angle of bounce of course makes a big difference. But as you have seen it can give an even light.

Hi,

It's a "Go-Vibe III" made buy a great guy in Canada called "Norm" http://www.go-vibe.com . It's rather good for the money and I'm still burning it in. Running it with various Sennheisers but it's main use is with my HD-600 running from my various iPods (I encode with lossless to keep up the quality) I also use "Kimber Kable" to connect my iPods line out to the amp.

Another note about the amp is Norm made it so you can swap the op-amp and he sent mine with two so I can play with the sound type.... cool :)

You're posting it as a link. If you want the pic to show up here, you have to use code. The easiest way to do it is after you click on the "Reply" button (not quick reply, but the "Post Reply" button on the bottom left), and the reply window comes up, look at the little icons over the text window. There is one that looks like a mountain, with a yellow background. Click on that, and a box will pop up asking you to enter the URL. Enter the URL of where your picture is on the net (cut and paste the URL). Then click OK or whatever it says, and voila, your picture will show up here. Hope that made sense.

You people are confusing totally blurred background and bokeh quality.

This is a sample of a bicture with good bokeh:
http://andrew4137.fotopic.net/p16391170.html

Note how the OOF objects are just blurred and not doubled or turned into hexagons and half-moons.

This is BAD bokeh. A normal leaf was turned into circles for some reason:
http://andrew4137.fotopic.net/p9274070.html

IMO the best bokeh a lens can produce is gaussian blur. Unfortunately, few of them do that.

Probably has a lot to do with the background itself, rather than just the lens. My last entry into this thread was choppy, due to very contrasty, choppy background. This one is smoother, despite being shot at f/7.1....

First, Let me say that these are both EXCELLENT shots! :D About the bokeh, it's funny that the first image seems to have entirely different circular type bokeh, while the second has a very nice smooth bokeh, and yet both are from the same lens? This would prove that there are a lot of different influences on bokeh besides just the lens.

At the risk of sounding ignorant. Whats bokeh ?
I have just recently bought a 350D with a kit lens and a 75-300 IS
I am taking a B&W class at a local college and have tons and tons to learn. Ive been reading the posts on here and find them very helpful.
As far as my pics I have resorted to tricking friends and family into looking at them in emails by attatching them to files with Nude pics as the subject matter. But now everyone has figured that out so no one will open my emails any more.

Thnx for more great info. after reading this I think its safe to say not all the pics posted on this thread display bokeh. I think ???
I agree. The majority of the pics posted display just shallow DOF

You can't see bokeh at all, if the circle of confusion is greater than the frame diagonal!

Am I confusing Out of Focus with Bokeh? My understanding of the word bokeh is that in the Japanese language literally means "Out of Focus". Now the quality of the out of focus area is another matter that apparently can be debated until the cows come home, and hence there is Good Bokeh and Bad Bokeh with various interpretations. Now, What was the question again? ;)

Corrupted (Saif) -- both shots were planned to show a smooth gradation in the edges of the out-of-focus fruit in the background. These are reflective spheres with highlights. So, not just planned around having a blurred background, but also the nature of the blur and the highlights off the wet glistening fruit. hope that clarifies...

Put a B in front of Okay

hmmm I thought it was Bokeh, just the way it was written.

Sounds like Bo (short bo like bo and arrow not bow to your master) Keh.

Here is a good source:

Bokeh.

A term borrowed from the Japanese, pronounced with short vowels. (ie: more like French pronunciation - bo-ké - versus long English diphthongs - bow-kay.)

from http://photonotes.org/cgi-bin/entry.pl?id=Bokeh

and

Bokeh is so spelled that it would not be mispronunciated as boke (bowk). Bokeh (pronounced bo-keh) literally means blur. It is also used to describe the state of blurred mind, such as jet lag or those caused by aging. Either way, it indicates fuzzy, out-of-focus situation.
from http://medfmt.8k.com/mf/bokeh.html

You would be correct if you pronunced Okay as Okeh lol :p
