Forgive me but being a beginner I thought Bokeh was Background blur?
It is, and those shots might have the least bokeh of anything I've seen outside the landscapes forum :p
For those who are new to this, we might clarify:
Bokeh is derived from a Japanese word that could be simply translated as "blur". So, strictly speaking, it refers to a soft/blurred background and/or foreground that falls out of the "depth of field" (zone of apparent focus/sharpness) of a shot.
But bokeh is also used to describe the quality of the out-of-focus areas. This quality is determined partly by the design of the lens aperture -- how many blades are used and whether they are rounded or not are factors -- and other factors in the actual shot. The "best" bokeh is typically shot using the widest aperture, for example, and also requires a good closeness to the subject relative to the distance from the background.
One typical way of "evaluating" the quality of bokeh is to see how "specular highlights" (points of light) are rendered -- smooth and round, for instance, is typically considered "good bokeh".
A lot of shots I take are of relatively distant subjects, and so they are too close to their background relative to my position, which leads to a "busy" background (not so good bokeh). When you can get closer to your subject relative to the background, you can get a much smoother, pleasing effect. But, catching those "specular highlights" that "show off" bokeh, well, that takes some planning in your shooting.
Here's a shot with that "busy background" look -- I was a fewfeet from the bee (shot with the 30D and the 100-400 lens @400).
http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/80448308.jpg
Here's another shot taken from closer up, 30D and 100mm Macro, where the background smooths out:
http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/80448800.jpg
Here's another "busy background" shot where I was probably 15 feet away from the dragonfly (30D with the 100-400 @400):
http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/81873290.jpg
And here's one, same lens @400, showing how closeness makes a huge difference:
http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/95837648.jpg
But, as you can see, though all of these have "some bokeh" in terms of background blur, the "specular highlight" quality is not so noticeable, compared to, say, a shot like these next two, shot with the EF 50 f/1.4 lens, not one known for the best of bokeh, but a nice wide aperture:

I've heard that remark on occasion, and in the "documentary" sense you could certainly agree -- in fact "no bokeh" could be preferable to total background blur for a lot of documentary and photojournalism stuff. But then, we wouldn't have a thread like this where we like to get "artsy":)!

Tony... thank you for your illumination on bokeh. I've been "away" and this is a great return to potn. I even have a duck somewhere in my files. Will read your definiton or better maybe, clarafication, of bokeh numerous times. Liked your "artsie" comment.

Hey Tony, One more I like from this morning, same flower. Not shooting into the light source and no water droplets on plants. Not much to create specular effect. Good distance between flower and background with good light transition = creamy? While I was away I realized how much I was limiting myself by being intimidated by flash, so I've been taking advantage of some of the other resources here, as I have time, to expand my abilities to capture what I see. God bless the amateur photograper who I was sharing some of my fun in photoshop with. She said, "Looks to me like you need to spend more time learning how to use your camera and less time playing with photoshop.
Ouch, bless you Gayle.

I'd say this is a bad example of bokeh, actually. At first glance, the circle of confusion looks like its all over the place because the depth of field is so narrow. As far as the bokeh itself is concerned, the noise in the shot, combined with the brown background doesn't really show much off as far as the qualitities of the background blur are concerned.

I'm a newbie, so someone suggested using Opanda iEXIF, a freebie.. you just right-click on the photo and it gives you a link to the EXIF .. if the EXIF info is available, of course.:)

Thank you, Stepineden! I know the web/spider portion of the shot isn't as sharp as it should be, but that's about all I was able to do (next purchase, extension tubes!). The web was under 2" across and the spider was about as big as a pinhead, IF that, lol. I barely noticed the web while I was searching for something to shoot in my yard, but at least the background turned out cool.
Your bokeh shot is nice too - thanks again! Carla
