Since the EXIF on the dog shot shows 200 focal length, I assume it was the 70-200 IS2.8L.

Hi Step... great looking dog there as well as the bokeh :o) No, I didn't PS the colors -- I got lucky as the day I went to Descanso Gardens, everything was in bloom and the tulips were stunning .. they had so many different varieties, but I'd say that was my best shot of the day. I took another version in reverse, but I think the purple photo had better composition.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this (couldn't read all 402 pages), but the whole premise of this thread is based on a fallacy. You can't post your "best" bokeh. The bokeh of a lens is fixed. Bokeh is the quality of the OOF regions, not the magnitude or diffusiveness of OOF regions

You know you contradicted yourself? If the bokeh of the lens is fixed but is also the quality of the OOF regions, then it's not fixed since the quality of the OOF regions can vary. :D

???
No the level of diffusiveness of backgrounds and foregrounds changes for a given lens depending on the DOF, but the optical attributes of a lens does not change, so bokeh is constant, given it is a function of lens optics not DOF...
So I guess all I'm saying is this thread should be renamed "Post your nicest diffused backgrounds" or "Post your lens comparisons" or "Post your low DOF shots" because that's what it really is

It definitely is a lot of shallow DOF shots but honestly, you're defining a word that has no exact definition as it's...made up. Not to mention bokeh is a interpretive.
You did contradict yourself my defining bokeh as two different things. Fixed and varied.

13hrs since anyone has posted? Shame. I started the day looking for bokeh. Dropped my 100macro and lashed on the 70-200 2.8. at 7am. Great disappointment thru the day, then as I'm doing the bbq I turn and see the light. Thanks God I didn't burn the chicken or corn. Seriously, since getting into this thread I've been shooting minimum 60 shots a day instead of 60 shots a week. It makes a difference. I even hit empty trying to find "it", starting to think it was time to put the camera away for awhile. Then I turned around and there was that thrill of the light falling, illuminating, revealing, calling....

I also appreciate it when folks note the lens used to get the shot. Very helpful to those of us who are trying to figure out which lenses we might like and what is highest priority for the kind of photos we like to take. After years of just using one or two Tamron zoom lenses, it is fun to be using the 24-105L and to see what can be done with some other lenses. Thanks!

Problem with this combination is the DOF which is about 1/4" and it still didn't deliver a ideal bokeh of the background flowers. More experimentation required. Great fun.

Actually it's the quality of the OOF component of an image. All fast lenses can throw the backround/forground OOF equally (same focal length, same aperture). How the OOF areas are rendered is bokeh.

Dtufino, Bokeh is when the back or foreground is out of focus which creates a pleasing(to some) blurry look.
thanks for the lesson on "Bokeh", but the images i posted are considered BOKEH... recalibrate your Monitor and look again.... the first picture the backgrouns is OOF while the mirros is infocud, the second imge the animal is in forcus while the grass it he backgrouns is way OOF....
here's another one just to make u happy!

Picked up a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 yesterday. This is one of the first shots I took with it.
http://www.digitalkinetics.org/photos/519571194_X5njL-L.jpg
Unfortunately the first copy (of the lens, not the kitten) was unacceptably soft wide-open and the AF was way out, so I took it back and swapped it for another copy. The second copy is certainly sharper, but it still front-focuses at close range and back-focuses at longer distances. I think I'll keep this copy and send it off for calibration.
It's such a shame about Sigma's Quality Control issues, because the colours, contrast, and bokeh of this lens really do live up to the hype. I really want to love it, but if I can't depend on it then I won't use it.

Two recent shots from my Sigma 50 f/1.4...both in about as tough a bokeh situation as you can be put in...hundreds of specular highlights behind the focus point. I'm still impressed by this lens...no edge to the highlights, and just smooth and buttery. I can't imagine what a poor bokeh lens would have rendered these scenes like...it'd be rings everywhere!
