Can some posters explain their view of bokeh as they relate to the photos here...the widipedia has this to say about bokeh:
Bokeh (derived from Japanese, a noun boke 暈け, meaning "blur" or "haze") is a photographic term referring to the appearance of point of light sources in an out-of-focus area of an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field.[1] Different lens bokeh produces different aesthetic qualities in out-of-focus backgrounds, which are often used to reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.

When I first posted a shot with bokeh it related to the first part of the definition, that being the out of focus points/sources of light, but it seemed that just out of focus backgrounds/foregrounds used to "reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject" had become accepted...so I started shooting for that...but...

Has the definition of bokeh changed so that the background itself can be the primary subject?

I don't see this shot as having any real bokeh. There is out of focus, blurriness, but none of it adds in a pleasing way to enhance the main subject. It might create another level of interest or create a story so to speak but I don't see it as adding to the beauty of the photograph. It is that effect, almost like someone took a paintbrush to the photo
that I personally respond to, the "oooohhh" effect..

Luvsadog2, I think I have seen most of the photos you have posted and I'm having trouble thinking of any that weren't worthy. Enjoyed them all actually! The only photo on this thread that left me scratching my head (think it was here) was a brick/stone wall slightly out of focus, and it probably had its place. I'm just trying to say that I think there is a separation at some point between effective use of oof in a photo and it becoming bokeh. Is that a personal preference decision or is there a technical guide line.
Just kinda wondering..... Here is another with the 24-70. I so want to put my 100macro back on but how will I learn ...if you here something bumping around in the dark, it's just me looking for a little light....:)

I do not have any bokeh giants (85L, 200L, etc.) so maybe I am easy to please but I like the bokeh that I get from the 24-70L. I like the OOF lights/highlights effect that I get. These are real busy backgrounds (Time Square). I think the BG adds context and has pleasing highlights, at least to me. Both of these are f4, not wide open. I wish I grabbed some 2.8's as well but the moment has passed.

stepineden
5th of May 2009 (Tue), 09:02
single_track, I figure the focus and bokeh issues are directly related to the idiot behind the camera ( wait a minute, did I just say that?), and not the lense on the front of the camera. Until someone can prove me wrong on that assumption I'll keep working that 24-70......bumping around in the dark, can anyone tell me where the light switch is?

Rachellebee27
5th of May 2009 (Tue), 10:40
I think 2.8's would have ruined your "isolating the subject" and left them a little too blurry around the edges. I have plenty of trouble with remembering to bump down the aperture as to isolate, as you can see from my recent bee pics (post #6137 in this thread). I hate those missed opportunities...

You can also see from this shot... I had PLENTY of room to use a small aperture, as the green background here was the lawn 1 story down and several yards away. I would have really liked to have the whole flower in focus.

That's a great point. On the statue guy, I remember bumping the aperture to f4 from f2.8 to ensure I would get all of him in focus for what would be a quick grab shot. I remember thinking that I wanted a little more DOF. I did not think specifically about the edges but you are right. While a larger aperture would better blur the BG, it would have likely softened the subject's edges and weakened the background separation a bit (the effect I absolutely wanted).

A new thing to think about: sharp subject edges for better separation. I am another step closer to knowing everything. Thanks.

Hey Bokeh buddies!

I wanted to post a few shots that are not so much examples of great bokeh, but are rather examples of results you can get with what you could consider "unorthodox" gear.

I was out shooting a couple days ago with the 1DM3 with the 100-400 lens and a 1.4x TC, mounted on a monopod, and ended up in the woods where I found very few birds and such, but quite a few Spring forest flowers.

Now, I also had my 5D with a shorter lens, and I could have hiked back and gotten my tripod and a macro lens, and taken "real" flower shots with "real" bokeh, but I decided "what the heck" and determined to take "silly" flower shots with my birding gear.

Try to picture a heavy rig and you're pointing it down toward a flower and leaning over into the viewfinder and trying to hold it steady, but your position is awkward and at f/11 your shutter speed is slow and your weaving back and forth trying to steady yourself to get a shot...that's what it was like in the dim light of the woods.

But, I got some shots that did not suck, and I'm sharing here because, at MFD, f/11, over 500 mm, I also got some shots with the makings of bokeh! Pretty crazy!

Don't worry too much about that. We all post our best shots here but we keep quiet about the not-so-good ones (for most of us, that's the majority of our shots). My keeper rate is less than 10%, no shame in that :)

At first I thought this was shot with the 50L :D, but then I thought, no, there is something wrong with the perspective, so I checked the exif - ok, ok :D. It is on my wish list. Long time from now :D.

Great shot, I really like it. The rendering is fabulous, DoF is perfect, expression is great, as is the contrast between the subject and background, and so is the framing. I keep on looking at it, I find.

Keep looking thru my unhappy shoot from the other day to see what I can learn.
It doesn't help when shooting in bright sunlight to have accidentally adjusted exposure to +.33. Might explain washed out colors. Then hand held on a breezy day makes getting good focus real difficult. Here is one after pumping the color.

Hi Allen,

At first I thought this was shot with the 50L :D, but then I thought, no, there is something wrong with the perspective, so I checked the exif - ok, ok :D. It is on my wish list. Long time from now :D.

Great shot, I really like it. The rendering is fabulous, DoF is perfect, expression is great, as is the contrast between the subject and background, and so is the framing. I keep on looking at it, I find.

Kind regards, Wim

Thanks Wim..

Heres a lil sump'm from yesterday same glass.

Sheesh! Aaarrrrgh!

You already (ok, Perry and a few others too :D) are responsible for making me add a 135L to the bag (finally got my second one, a good one, yesterday :D), don't do this to me! :D

Looks like this is another thread I have to unscribe from :D.

Hopefully my mail (if I ever get to it again)... actually, the bees had been hanging out in the water main turnoff box on the ground below the mailbox and the DWP vector people were supposed to deal with it today .. These are great photos, with nice background blur, but is this actually bokeh (e.g. the eagle shots) ? To me, the bokeh is something different, a special distortion effect created by a lens' diaphragm. Most photos in this thread show b/g blur - unless I completely misuse the term.

No, bokeh is just blur and the way it behaves, and most often used when referred to when describing background blur. The adjective used with the word bokeh is the important part, as we are (most of the time) looking for great or pleasant bokeh, i.e., a pleasant rendering of the transition from sharp to unsharp when going from in-focus to OOF and of the unsharp area in general, without sharp lines, double lines or rings, etc, IOW, smooth transitions in terms of tone and delineation.

Good bokeh is generally created by the lens design in the first place. Another important point is aperture and/or FL, as a large aperture and/or a long FL make it easier because of the greater separation between back- and foreground. The aperture may contribute, because very angular aperture blades may cause double line effects or a very busy background, while more rounded aperture blades may cause a smoother transition. However, generally speaking, a rounded aperture will help in the creation of nicely rounded specular highlights in the back- or foreground, like in the picture by S.E.V slightly higher up. Combine this with good optical bokeh, and the spherical highlights disappear smoothly and softly in the background .... :D

Do note that OOF back- and/or foreground may also contribute to good bokeh or not :D, as long linear elements with sharp contrasts in the OOF zones, like grass blades fairly close up, reeds, etc., may also cause bokeh to be less pleasing.

Kind regards, Wim
