the OOF area was pretty bland so you don't really get a contrastive background. it was just grass.

Nice bokeh there, Chris. The green grass is like butter. It would been more impressive if that had been a $100 bill that was being burned, though.

Hah, thanks Kerry. I noticed that I can get ultra-smooth bokeh with use of noise ninja since noise is most noticeable on oof areas. Since I shot at iso1600, I had to use some intense noise ninja which really smoothed out the oof area.

70-200 f/4L: 1/500", f/4, 200mm, ISO 800
the oof area is that deep, but it is there. however, i've found that even though noise ninja gives a smooth and noiseless bokeh, the oof area tends to look deformed and fake.

Just curious as to why you wouldn't drop down to 400 ISO and shoota at 1/250. This is a stationary object so the only hting you would have to worry about is hand shake. then yo wouldn't have to use as much Noise ninja.

I absolutely hate blur from camera shake. I often shoot higher ISOs just to ensure that ALL shots get a fast shutter. Even on a cloudy day I will shoot ISO 1600. I know the noise can be dealt with with noise ninja which is why I don't hesitate for higher ISOs. A noisy shot + noise ninja is much more usable than a blurry shot.

I don't doubt that I could get a very sharp picture at 1/250" (since the ideal speed would be 1/320" on the 350D), but you never know. I got pretty blurry shots at 1/200" at the NYC POTN meet last sunday. Then again, the subjects were moving around like crazy.

Exactly, I was shooting inside at a birthday party last weekend with my newly acquired EF 70-210 f/3.5-4.5. not the fastest lens and light was really bad. i shot at ISO 800 and 1-60-1/80 to get "enough" light with some fill flash from the built in. This was of a child (1 yr old) and I had very little throw aways from camera shake. I think you would be suprised if you gave it a shot, no pun intended, at the results. Since digital is "free" why not try both shots next time.

I actually did that today. I took some shots at ISO 800 and others at ISO 1600. I would certainly like to shoot longer with a lower ISO so that the bokeh can be smooth with noise ninja without making actual textured surfaces too smooth. I'm just confused as to why 1/320" and 1/200" was producing a blurry picture. Many times I get the position where holding the camera steady is difficult (ie. lying on the ground or squatting or something). I'll keep trying to shoot on the longer shutter speed end to see where my results land. I haven't really taken enough shots to determine if 1/160" or 1/200" is not fast enough. Thanks for the advice.

Dragos, I think that's a fantastic shot! The bokeh is interesting, unlike any other I have seen.

Here's a bunch of shots I took today!
Most were shot at ISO 800 with speeds averaging 1/500" @ 200mm.
They were of course taken with my new 70-200 f/4L.

Apparently this thread goes on and on. Well. For a change, let's try some sports bokeh, which apparently is not too common in this thread.

While browsing through my older shots, I came across these pictures from athletics world championship contest from last summer. These guys are running men's marathon. The shots are from 41 km (25 mile) mark, with something like final kilometer (1.000 yds.) to go. Still, unless you have seen it, it is hard to imagine how fast these guys really go.

The lens is 200mm/2.8 L, attached to 20D body.

Time to add something as well:
first one with Rollei 35T, fully opened (f/3.5) at 1/8 or 1/15th using NPP1600 film. around 6AM, coming home from town. Slight motion blur, nice bokeh, although the circumstances are fairly easy here.
Second: Giving a friends Leica M6 a try with either summilux or summicron 35mm around f/2 I think. Just a snapshot taken years back, but this bokeh has me wanting an 'M' ever since. If only I could justify the expense of a second kit... That *is* a drawback of digital: Almost no customer wants film anymore.

We all found the 'B' word exciting and esoteric when we first came across it, but hasn't it run its course?
Whilst I've both enjoyed and admired the postings here, it's apparent that a great many have missed the nuance of the word.

It's precious photo-salon flummery that seeks more to exclude than include. Time to hand it back to the Japanese and thank them for the loan.

Bokeh and the performance of certain lenses in regard to bokeh is boring to some but not to me.

We are closing this thread at 1000 posts to make you happy?

Nah. Bokeh done either right and wrong has a distinct attraction.

We keep on the quest -maybe like so lemmings-- I admit, but... we enjoy it. Bring 'em on!

Of course how a lens delivers the out of focus elements is important, but we've managed to document these comparisons/judgements pefectly well for years (cats & doughnuts, anyone?) without using contrived language.

I'm merely campaigning to tax the word, or at least agree annual international quotas. Just imagine the collateral damage if it were to get into the twisted vocabulary of someone like mad Don Rumsfeld.

I wish people would rather describe the qualities of the bokeh than simply saying "there's some nice bokeh". The "creamy bokeh" doesn't say much either as I've often been confused as to what a bad bokeh is versus a good bokeh. Lenses that produce lousy bokeh (ie. the nifty fifty) can still produce soft OOF areas. It took me a thread that was posted here yesterday to clarify what a bad bokeh really is.

Now I don't think the bokeh of the 50 is all that bad if used in the right situations. This shot is wide open at 1/4000, ISO 100. Only PP was slight exposure adjustment (1/4000 still wasn't fast enough) and local contrast USM for web.

I agree. People must be enjoying it or they would not be reading it and posting to it. If anyone is tired of it then they should take a break from visiting it.
