It's not really "nice" bokeh since this lens doesn't really do that, but maybe it can provide a good contrast between "good" and "bad" bokeh.

A good guess, but unfortunately, this car is not the F1 car. After comparing the noses of the BMW Sauber and this car (Formula BMW), the Formula BMW's nose is a bit thinner and widens as it comes closer to the cockpit. The Sauber's nose is a bit wider from the front wing mounting pylons back to the cockpit. The paint schemes on the noses are exactly the same.

Another difference is that the emblem on the Formula BMW is actually mounted onto the car. No F1 team would do such a thing to the car due to the added aerodynamic penalty, especially when it's something as insignificant as a manufacturer emblem.

Hey, I wish they had the Sauber at the auto show, but as you could guess, F1 is an unpopular as it gets here in the states.

Got to say, this bokeh looks terrible. Note the double images in the background of the blades of grass and the strange effect above the nose. This is acttually a classic example of bad bokeh.

Here is a link to a good technical article on bokeh. (http://www.darkroom.com/MiscDocs/bokeh.pdf)

I tend to get a bit more subjective and say if the OOF part of the photograph detracts from the overall quality of the picture it is bad bokeh.

When a photograph hurts my eyes tying to focus the background or foreground that is about as bad as it gets for me.

I have really enjoyed this series and have posted here myself. I'd like to see it continue with more discussion on what bokeh is and why we think a picture we post is a good example.

I fully agree. After a cruise through most of the images in the thread I would say that there is a lack of understanding as to what good and bad bokeh really is. For example, Virtually any shot taken at macro distances will have a nice out of focus background due to the tiny depth of field of the shot. All of the photos in here that are may be great macro shots, but they don't necessarily mean the lens has good bokeh.

In other posts it appears as though people assume that subject separation from the background means good bokeh. As we can see with the tiger shot above, this is not necessarily the case.

Good and bad is hard to define, and additionally can be a very personal judgement. That said, what many define as good, neutral and poor bokeh is shown in the image attached. On the left is an example of bad bokeh. You will note that it has a sharply defined outer rim, and is darker towards the centre. In the middle is an example of a highlight from a lens that we would say has neutral bokeh. It is an evenly illuminated circle, with a well defined outer edge. Finally, on the right is an example of an out of focus highlight from a lens with good bokeh. It has an undefined edge, and is not distracting.

The different types of bokeh are caused by spherical aberration. I won't try to explain it in detail, but basically, if a lens has good bokeh for backgrounds, it will have bad bokeh for foregrounds, and vice versa. This is due to under or over corrected spherical aberration. Given that "good" bokeh is actually caused by imperfection in the design, most lenses are actually designed to achieve neutral bokeh. The shot of the BMW is a pretty good example of this.

A second factor where bad bokeh can rear its ugly head is with aperture blades. All of us will have shots where pinpoints of light display as little pentagons or whatever. This occurs when a lens is closed down somewhat from maximum aperture, and the pattern of the aperture blades is reflected in the out of focus highlights. Nowadays many modern professional lenses are constructed with rounded aperture blades so as to give nice round highlights even when stopped down somewhat from maximum aperture.

Bokeh is such a big deal in Japan that lenses like the Minolta 85mm STF (smooth trans-focus) are designed with technical innovations specifically to achieve pleasing bokeh. Others are deliberately created with undercorrected spherical aberration in order to obtain the incredible smooth creamy backgrounds that they are famous for (at the price of poor bokeh in front of the plane of focus).

Cheers,

Antony

I have several that I like, but this is from my film days. My favorite blur is usually similar to that produced by the human eye when you focus on something close up with your eyes and the background is out-of-focus; a "natural" look. For my taste, too much and it can become special effect like or just distracting.

Very nice photo, PAFC2004. I like that.

Yes I do love the lens. But I really do long for more reach ! I mostly shoot at 200mm with birds ect. But can see I am not fond of a fixed focal length ie my 50mm! I really like the zoom. John

I wish that I had something longer as well. I had thought about the 100-400mm, but I do not have the money for it right now. The length would make it easier getting photos of those birds that are hard to sneak up on. :)

It appears that my photos did not come through above. Is anyone else seeing them?

At f/13 most likely just sky.

Nice shot. The focus is definitely tack sharp. I was driving home with my son today and we saw two Guineas, but before I could get the 50mm prime off and the 70-200mm f/4L on the camera, they flew off. :(

Having only just heard of the term bokeh a few weeks ago and being a newbie to photography and this forum, I don't know if this is good or bad bokeh. Anyway, here is my contribution to this thread. Taken with Powershot A620.

That is beautiful ! Your focus point is perfect and very sharp !

I do like those better more of a classical bokeh style. But your first is still bokeh but the subject seems to be in the bokeh/back ground and the back ground in focus/forground. I like it .

If anyone wants to see more of my pictures I have a new account on smugmug. Johnathan

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=82084&stc=1&d=1148747266 I'm a newbie too & am just learning about bokeh. I think your photo is great, but according to this article, "What is Bokeh" (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/bokeh.htm) it wouldn't be considered "good" bokeh, since the bg edges are still fairly sharp. :)
