I think the wrong subject was focused. :D:D On a serious note, it's a pretty good bokeh.

Great shot but I think the model /person might be a better topic. Had it of just been waves and the subject chosen it would have been perfect due to lack of distration in the background

OK check it out...

I went to a local car show in my town tonight and pulled an interesting trick off..

I had the camera focused on the reflection in one of the cars side-view mirrors.. it was about 75-100 ft at my 8 o'clock. so the lens is focusing out that far, and the car itself is way out of focus. at the same time, oncoming trafic is at about that focal length, so you get the illusion of someting close to you being in focus, and something far being in focus, and bokeh in between! :D

is the 1.4 worth the price difference over the 1.8?

Yes, it is worth the price. The USM alone is worth the price in my book. Beyond that, however, you get the extra half stop of light, the build quality is much better with the 1.4. After reading many threads on the forums here and looking at various reviews on Fred Miranda and other sites, I decided to go with the 1.4 over the 1.8.

I should have set the aperture to f/8 or smaller. You can't even tell there's a waterfall in the background because of the "extreme bokeh". Oh well...

as you observed, there are alot of folks taking surf pics here and a bunch of them are pros along with a loosely knit gaggle of hobbyists like myself. we have alot of fun bunching up sometimes to make it look like a media event is going on, lol. but most of all, we like talking about photography, to the distraction of why we're at the beach with all that gear in the first place.

In general...get a subject...be fairly close to them. Shoot close to wide open (f/4 in your case), and get a background that's a bit distant. That's one way to get some bokeh.

Depending on what the distance is behind it you can get great blur. Also I find the longest focal point (200mm) brings out better blur. As seen in these two images below.

Here's a candid of my wife at the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. Taken with my 1D/EF 17-35 f/2.8L combo at 17mm, mode=Av Priority, Av=f/2.8, Tv=1/2500, ISO=200, no flash. A polarizing filter was also used.

Here are a couple of recent ones. My monitors need to be recalibrated, so I'm not sure 100% sure about the colors on these. But who cares. It's a "bokeh" thread after all... ;)

RAW is a beautiful thing. The pic I posted above yours was pretty severely underexposed. I boosted the brightness by about a stop and a half, sharpened, and the boosted saturation levels. That's it. Less than 5 minutes worth of work for a shot that would've otherwise got deleted.

Wow and I thought that was pretty much straight out of the camera. Yes I am liking this RAW thing, the problem is that I now have to buy more cards. I went through a 1GB card yesterday with 63 pictures, that was it.

Lord_Malone I am really getting into this. I cant wait till i become better at it.
