Since the recent 'Best Bird Shots' thread collected a dazzling bunch of photos... I'd like to ping all POTN members to end up with a similarly memorable thread full of beautiful bokeh photos.

Lets go.. :cool::cool::cool::cool:

Dont we need some spectular highlights in the shots for a good Bokeh sample? Like WepWaWep's, it's a great sample of 'bokeh' even if it's very distracting, with visible aperture and the blue edging. Even my old 80-200 F4-5.6 can produce pleasing Bokeh in the right light. That's not to say that 80 1.8 samples bokeh isnt beautiful though :p

For us newbies. What is " Bokeh" ?

I've always used this to explain it to others:

"Good bokeh can be seen in the natural, smooth and coherent way the out of focus objects in the photograph are presented. The blurry blobs should mantain its basic shape and tone. Bad bokeh is when the out of focus blobs are presented in a DISTRACTING way. This can be seen as jumbled shapes, choppy patterns of light and dark. A common example is the out of focus donut shaped blob of a specular highlight, usually associated with mirror lenses, or the double images seen in the bokeh of some lenses."

Having said this, what specifically is good and bad bokeh is, of course, a matter of personal opinion.

Yes, this was taken with the Sigma 70-300 APO. For the budget minded this is a great little lens, I love it (until I get that 'L' of course...).Here's another shot of the same bird taken with the same lens...also with great bokeh...

Maybe some of you with more knowledge could enlighten this 'bokeh' a little bit?

As far as I (as a novice in this area) understand it's just not the question of an out-of-focus background and a well used DOF but the differences i bokeh is something that has to do with the optics in your lens. Different lenses make a different kind of 'pattern' in the out-of-focus background. The way the lens records the differences between dark and light areas makes up the specific bokeh for that lens? Taking the same picture with different lenses should produce different bokeh depending on the optical structure of the lens - and some lenses produce a nicer bokeh than others?

So if this definition is correct then a photo with a plain coloured out-of-focus background is actually not an example of good bokeh, but a photo where the structured, patterned out-of-focus background adds something essential to the picture is showing a good bokeh? (As an example the 'ugly bird' picture by neil_r on page 2 above doesn't show much bokeh but his second picture does).

In my opinion good examples of well-used bokeh are the pics by WepWaWep and Jarrad on page 1 or MTalley on page 2 or mikeymike's picture on this page (and many others really - many exellent pictures here...).

Am I on the right tracks here?

G3owner

(As an example the 'ugly bird' picture by neil_r on page 2 above doesn't show much bokeh but his second picture does).

Bokeh is quality of out of focus content. Whether out of focus area is a tree, sky, wall, fence .. that is not really relevant. Bokeh happens in front, behind and on the "edges" of DoF plane. Good bokeh is smooth, round, natural and unobtrusive. Bad bokeh is jaggied, visible, unnatural, distracting.

karusel
24th of August 2005 (Wed), 09:15
Also, every out of focus point turns to a circle (or a pentagon, lol) and the circles can be rendered in three ways, evenly lit; ligher in the centre, dimmer to the edge; dimmer in the centre, lighter to the edge. The second way ensures best bokeh.

Here is my contribution. This is my daughter after a recent dance competition. Shot was taken with 85mm f/1.8. Exif - f/2.8, 1/200th, flash w/ sigma ef-500 dg super. Only thing better than excellent bokeh is a lens that can produce excellent bokeh AND be super sharp. (that is why I included the 100% crop!) I love my 85!

Just love this thread. If I went looking for a $50 coffee table book on bokeh I wouldn't get anything better than this collection.

Here is a shot of a runner using the 135L at f5.0... circles of light are pretty good.

Of course, maybe it's just shallow DOF/selective focus, eh CDS?

could someone define "bokeh" for me? I'm Japanese and i'm sure this word derived from our language, but it literally means "out of focus".

and I'm still a DSLR noob, but I'll give it a try.

That is the exact literal meaning we use for photography. The picture you posted demonstrates good use of it.

I think that, in photography, the essence of "bokeh" is in how those out-of-focus subjects are rendered. Pleasing bokeh (IMHO) tends to be smoothly rendered blends of background colors, etc. Just being out of focus doesn't make for nice "bokeh" because some poor quality lenses will render these areas in harsh, splotchy or even moire or patterned textures.

IMHO, as I see it, from what I have read, etc.

I will not be dragged into any arguments or other confrontational discussions on the topic, just offering my view.
