I have been having a problem with the Manual setting in that when I set the apperture to saw 1/1000 and then focus it automatically takes the image at 1/250? I have no idea why it changes? Any insights? Please?

I fiddled around with my camera, and it seem that the S30 requires at least 1/250 shutter speed (or slower) to use flash. If you simply disable the flash, your 1/1000 setting will work. It looks like it's a camera limitation that can't be worked around as far as I can tell.

I don't know about other brands or models, but my G1 has the same 1/250s limitation when flash is on. I think it's explained somewhere in the owner's guide.

Oddly, though, when I took my daughter's one-year pictures (here: http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9340 ) using the off-camera shoe cord, I was able to use a faster shutter. In fact, the EXIF data says the flash was off, though it obviously fired properly.
