Intenal audio recording when using a lav?

I just did an interview with my 7D. ATR-3350 omnidirectional lav hooked up to my 7D so no way to monitor audio as recording. When I ran the audio I found that I was picking up major background noise, along with the interviewer who was right next to the camera 10ft. away from the subject.

Does the internal mic disable when an external is plugged in?

Anyone have suggestions on other lav mics?

thats not the internal mic. that's your omni directional lav.

the audio part of 7D should be questionable bc of the auto gain. There's a way to keep that 7d gain down.
