I just picked up a new computer with WinXP this weekend, just for doing digital photography. I spend most of Sunday loading Photoshop 7.0 and other needed softwares, such as the Canon 10D drivers (which luckily also work with D60).

On the good side Adobe was very good about resetting the ACR download so I could get it on the new computer. Although the tech support seemed to get a bit irritated when I asked when they would have a patch for the 10D.

On the bad side, it took me over 2 1/2 hours to figure out how to get PS7 to display the images the way my old computer did. On my new computer the file browser and the image would appear way too dark compared to what I was used to on my old Win98 machine. Since my printer is set for what I was used to this was bad. I finally figured out which setting to change after just going through all of the preference settings. The PS7 user manual was next to useless for helping me, although it did point me indirectly to the solution. I finally figured out I needed to change Adobe ACE to Windows ICM.

Anyway it is working now, yeah!

The cool part of my new computer is it has an internal 6 in 1 card reader and can read my CF cards directly (along with SD, SM, and memory stick) and on top of everything it reads them and copies them faster then transfering them from camera or my picture pad via USB.

I also got a faster CD-RW on board which cuts down on CD writing time significantly.

The only thing the computer did not have on my requirements list was the Sony DRU-500A DVD RW, but I figured I would have to get that later anyway.

[Trivia: new computer stats: Medion 43C123 with 2.4Ghz CPU, 533 Mhz bus, 512MB RAM, 120GB HD, Nvidia 64MB card, CD-RW, DVD-ROM (this will be changed to the Sony later), 6 in 1 card reader, ethernet, 5 USB 2.0, 3 firewire, and the usual serial, parallel, audio outputs) and it came with Windows XP professional and some other garbage software]. It was about $400 less then the next nearest computer which had WinXP home and $500 less then I budgeted, so I am very happy :-)

At least until I see my visa bill for the month :-(
