I have the canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro because it is pin sharp, i also complement it with the MR14EX ring flash - superb. I believe the Sigma means you don't have to get as close to your subject to get similar results as the Canon.

i don't have it yet but i'm planning to get the sigma 150......... why
becasue it gets great reviews ...has more working distance than the canon......... it is cheaper,
it is designed specifically for digital cameras with special coatings to cut down on ghosting and sensor reflection. and 2 low dispersion lens elements also to cut down on flare/ghosting... from what i have seen of images it is pin sharp also....

it also has inner focusing so the length of the lens does not change

I've got the Canon 100mm and love it but am seriously considering trading it in against the Sigma. The extra working distance is really appealing.

I just bought the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 macro because it's fast, sharp, good lookin, and not all that much more expensive than the canon. After getting the hood and everything the 100mm canon is only about $130ish less. I figured that the extra working distance plus a tripod colar would be 100% worth the extra $$$ and I was 100% right. This lens ROCKS! :) The working distance is amazing, I love it, it's absolutely perfect. Not too close, not too far, just right. It's a lot heavier than the canon (I owned the canon for a few days once) but it personally doesn't bother me.

Only thing I'm sad about is that it's a wee bit too long to be used with the built in flash. So, I'm trying to now save up for a ring flash. If you want some samples of the lens, there are a bunch of macro shots on my website right now. The link is in my sig, and all the butterflies, spiders, fly's, were shot with the sigma 150mm f/2.8.

the 100mm canon is only about $130ish less. .

i've seen the sigma 150 cheaper than the canon 100 in some shops..... in others it's only 20 pounds more expensive than the 100mm canon........

the fact that the sigma has an extra 50mm of range (and as you said you also get the lens hood and tripod ring........ they have gotta be worth more than 20 quid), means in my book that it is relatively cheaper than the canon lens...........
all round the sigma is a far better deal in my eyes....
