I need atleast 18mm on the wide end and 35 on the narrow end. (for a 350D)
At the moment I am going for the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX. Which is 500... :(
Anything sharp, that isn't as fast, that is cheaper? (I will not go with the kit lens).

Hmm. The tamron 17-35/2.8-4 lens is about the same price (covers full frame) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=303166&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
Heres a good review

Sigma also have a very similar type lens for -once again -the same price . http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=317360&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
But the just superceded non DG version is selling for $400 .

Tamron,Vivitar ,tokina and phoenix all have modestly priced wide zooms but they may not give much better results than the kit lens...

And just to confuse it all the rather good sigma 15-30 sells for $500

(i've seen this one compared to the canon 17-40/4L and it wasn't beaten by much...but then several of the better lenses listed here would also be very good)
