Nice pic Terry.

I too shoot football matches but on a Kodak dcs520, hoping to swap over at the start of next season if I can get a good deal.

I think my kodak is fine for what it requires but in truth it has a limit of 20x16 for print size what do you reckon your limitations are print wise with the 10D?

I have not printed, even with my D30, so i am not sure.

i think you will find a thread on this forum with the print capabilities.

Cool!

Was it a goal?

Can you give a bit more detail about the lens? Is that it in the exif data?

No goal, ball dropped just to the left of crossbar and post.

Lens is Sigma 135 - 400

Yes you left the >img etc etc. in your reply with quote.

If you edit the message just delete the image detail.

If you visit my website (link below), Click on Terrys Photo's and you will see a link to Swindon Robins v Thame.
there are a few more action photos taken the same day.

The 10D is great for Sports. I've had my 10D and lenses for about 10 days... I have not seriously worked an SLR for 30 years! Wow, the 10D, 70-200L IS 2.8, grip, and my ancient monopod took my best action shots, ever...

First Impressions:

2 FOOTBALL GAMES (soccer) about 250 shots, deleted down to 150 at breaks in play. Working out the "shutter lag" came naturally the more I shoot. The SPORTS setting worked perfectly with admittedly perfect light: Intense So California Sunshine.

The monopod was absolutely necessary. My left (focal length) shoulder still hurts.

8 VOLLEYBALL GAMES (2 matches) about 350 shots. The first match was shot under metal halide lamps. I set the 10D on manual everything using my "old school 35 mm" experience. I set the white bal manually and the iso to 800. The f-stop and shutter speed was varied. These shots also came out great. Lenses: 70-200L on Monopod and 28-70L handheld.

The second match was shot under sodium vapor lamps with the 10D set on Sports at first then I switched to time value w/o manually setting the white balance. Ugh! ALL shots were yellow/orange.

However, the Photoshop Elements software that came with the 10D corrected most of the color problems and sharpened (even more) all the images. I worked on two or three of the best shots for HOURS in search of the "best" images. I printed out multiple 4x6s for comparison. It felt like being back in the lab!

This afternoon I'm going to "work" my first baseball game. Retirement is great!

10D & SPORTS:

1) Know the sport (and team style) so you can anticipate the action from the best angles.

2) Shoot, Shoot, Shoot.

3) Use all the modes until you know what works where and when.

4) Get the white balance right! I have an electrical supply catolog that lists the temperature of most sports lamps. I'm going to try the 10D temp settings. Although, the actual ambient light depends on the age of the lamps, intensity, mix, reflective surfaces & etc. I would love a meter that would give me lumins at floor level as well as color temp.

5) If possible, immediately review your work with an eye for improving shooting and processing.

6) Learn to use all the features on photoshop "lite" and then upgrade, maybe. (the 10D utility has a mindblowing amount of info)

7) Share your work freely while learning. I give out CD-Rs to the coaches and make small prints for the referees. Talk about goodwill and ACCESS next time!

The 10D gives this old broken down fireman a reason to get out of bed everyday.

PS

Your Great Shot will get even better with processing!

I want to retire too! :D

I'm stuck here at my desk, the sun is shining and my new 10D is aching for my touch! :(

Thanks Norman, i will have a go with altering a few in PS.

If you look on my website http://www.robinsfc.co.uk/Terrys_%20Photos/Terry_Website/Frame_Index/thame/index.htm there are a few more taken the same time and again unedited.

I had the lens on approval it was a used lens, although i liked the lens - i had to send it back because i only managed to take 1 shot in 3, the other 2 locked up the camera with "Error 99".

The shop said it was an old lense and probably needed to be sent off to Sigma to be re-chipped to work properly.

They have given me a good discount on a new one and i am now awaiting delivery.

i also need to win the Lotto to retire, work is getting in the way of enjoyment.

Had second thoughts on the Sigma 135 -400, so I went back to the shop today and got a sigma 17 -35 & Canon 75 - 300, for the same price as the 135 - 400.

I now have with my 28 - 135IS range from 17 - 300.
That should cover for the type i like to take.

Would a converter 2x or 1.4 work with the standard canon 75 - 300?

Thanks for that info Terry, apprieciated.

A bit of info your way, for sports photography the 1.4 is better as it is quicker. When I've worked out how to place a pic of mine from today's match on this message board I will.

Burrrrr! It’s very cold here too .. I think we expect it only to hit 75 (25C) today. By the by, I did business in the U.K. for years and had a flat in Slough near the airport. Great country and great people!

Are you certain those details are correct? There seems to be a lot of width to the image and the perspective seems wrong for a 75-300 also a deep DO field for a f5.6 (too much for my liking really)...Just wondering!
