fStopjojo would be a good person to ask. He has the 24-70 and loves it ( his was re-chipped). Recently I took mine in to Sigma Australia ( because it appeared to be front focusing and appeared to really soft wide open ( perhaps it was just OOF ) Sigma said there was nothing wrong with the lens. So I'm going to take my 20D over to Canon for calibration and see if all is well.

I have a 24-70 Sigma and it works fine with my 20D, no rechipping necessary. From what I understand, if the serial number starts with a 4, it doesn't need rechipping.

That's what I heard too. Mines something like 400399.

I've always found Sigma very responsive so I would tell them your serial number and ask if there are any issues.

I got mine at www.digitalfotoclub.com. Good prices, but for my order they took a little while to ship it. Overall good experience. I was a little worried about focussing and sharpness at first, but after learning how to use it properly, it is a very sharp lens. I compared shots with the Sigma to the 24-70L at the local store and it did very well in comparison for 1/3 the cost. Overall, I like the lens a lot. Now, I just need to get my hands on the 70-200 f2.8 EX. I am hoping it will be my Christmas present to myself.

Some do, most don't (based on my experience of corresponding with probably over 200 owners of this lens). I have a 400-xxxx SN and it front focused; I sent it to Sigma USA and it returned to me perfect. If you look at my link below, see the last 2 images in that gallery, and you'll see "before and after" focusing at 24mm f2.8 with subject distance of roughly 15 feet, which is where it tends to be off IF it is off at all. BY AND FAR most people love their copies and feel it's about as close to the 24-70L as you can get (Ring USM, weathersealing aside).

Does anyone know how the 28-70 compares to the 24-70 in terms of picture quality, zoom and other things like that. For the last few days I've been contemplating between several lens' and I can't make up my mind due to mixed reviews.
I'm looking at the 24-70/28-70 sigma or the tamron 28-75 I believe. The 28-70 has the cheapest price of them all. Do the 4mm make a big difference for wider shots on the 24-70. Is the picture any different? Finally the 28-70 will cost me ~70USD cheaper so is it worth going to the 24-70 for the difference in money?
Thanks for the help

Dimitry ... it depends on you. I had the Tamron and sold it because I wanted a single lens rather than a wide angle and a standard zoom. To me, the 24mm on the Sigma was therefore worth the trouble in changing. The 28-70 is an older lens as I understand it and so that's why it's cheaper. I would get the Tamron or 24-70 DG EX Macro. You should be happy with either. The Tamron is lighter, but that wasn't a bit deal to me. The Sigma handles very well.

I agree with condyk,
The 24-70 EX is an excellent piece of kit for the money, and dont interpret that as in 'its good value' it is, but most 'good value' items mean they are just cheap and cheerful!
If you look at fstopjojo's site you can see that it can produce SHARP images, and also the ability to have such a short focusing distance is a real advantage sometimes. So it will be perfect as it seems with the 20D, after chip.
Compared to th 28-70...its an older lense, and not as good quaility in my opinion, and i would save/bite the buller for 70$ and just go for the 24-70. You wont regret it!
