I'm not sure what I was trying to convey here. It would be great if you could just tell me how it makes you feel.

Lower (brownish) one is the original. I messed around with color balance and added some grainyness to it.

Is it cheating if I took it in color first and then made it b&w? Should I have taken it in b&w mode to begin with? Is there really a difference?

I like the results you got with your black and white. It looks like something from a history book, whereas nothing in the color version really stands out.

I don't think taking it in color is cheating. Not only does it prevent the situation of "I really like this picture, I only wish I had it in color!" but it also allows you greater control over the black and white conversion (in my opinion).
