Hello,
I've bought a new 1D two weeks ago. Tonight I had a serious problem with my flashlight.
The flash works, the body works - but both do not work together simultaneosly. The flash comes too early. I've checked both, flashlight and body (+lenses), in any combination with the devices of my collegues. We came to the solution, that it has to be a problem with the body.
Does anyone knows what I did wrong?
Thanks
Harti

What flash are you using? The 540EZ and all EZ models for that matter don't work with the Digital EOS bodies except in full manual mode. The 550EX and other EX models work well.

I'm using 550 EX. Worked well for two weeks now. Problem appeared suddenly while taking pictures tonight. Contacts are obviously ok, no damages.

By firing too early, when exactly is the flash doing this? As you know, the 550EX in automatic mode is an ETTL device that will fire a “pre-flash” enabling the camera to adjust for the main flash. This pre-flash fires a few milliseconds before the main flash but you will be able to see this pre-flash in the viewfinder before the shutter blackout and main flash fire. I assume this is not the issue? What mode do you have the camera in? If the 550EX is set to ETTL it will pre-flash even if the camera is in full manual mode. More details please … Dan

I have talked to Canon Professional Service today. As the problem appeared from one second to another they agree it is not a user fault (settings, etc.).
They told me about a simple test: Switch to "bulb" and turn the Flash (550EX) to >>> (sorry, don't know the word for slow flash lightning at the end of each exposure). When the shutter opens there should be a flash (pre-flash) as well as when the shutter closes (main flash). If not (like in my case) the camera not ok.
Dan, I will let you know what the cps can do about it.
This problem appears in each mode an with every settings.
