First time I used my XT for a big event (cousin's wedding). While taking pictures at an awkward angle, people with their P&S heard the shutter firing away and told me to take their good spot. I lent my camera to my uncle to take some pics and the same thing happened. The point and shooters backed down for the XT. Good stuff! :-)

Wait 'til you break out a white L. First day I had mine I walked past a guy with a Nikon and got a thumbs up from him shooting the same fountain as he moved out of the way for my shot.

Now all that you need is the battery-grip to make it look like a mini-1D. :)

i am pretty sure most of the shutter noise depends on what lens you have. Correct me if im wrong.

The XT is a lot more quiet than the 20D (or the 1D's). The battery grip on it make it looks more "professional" but the one thing that gets most "amateurs" is to use an external flash... looks very impressive. Joking aside, I haven't seen anyone comment on the size of my camera, they all seem to think I'm professional when I use it to photograph a wedding or whatever. Might be how I use my elbows, dunno. :D

I was at the Ottawa Exotic Car Parade earlier this year with my XT + grip, monopod, zoom lens and all. My 2 buddies had 1) a P&S, and 2) a Panasonic FZ-20.
At one time we were in a restricted/dangerous zone. One of the organiser comes up to buddy 1 and ask politelly "could you move to a safer place behind the wall please". She then ask buddy 2 "could you move to a safer place behind the wall please". And then, she asked me if I had my media pass; I said no. So she handed me one :D

An XT or any other SLR beating up a point and shoot is like beating up your little brother.

Yes, I would agree for the shutter itself, but my camera sounds different when I shoot with my brother-in-law's 70-200 f4L. I don't know what it is for sure, but it does sound different. I was thinking the different sound could be due to the aperature stopping down or the effect of the lens acting like a sound chamber.

When I was out shooting once a National Geographic guy came upto me, a person very much my senior asking me about my camera (350D) as he had been shooting for 30 odd years with film but only had one digital which was a P&S. He thought I was professional but I had to be honest and fess up to only have been a fairly new amateur. We chatted a bit and he seemed very keen on the camera, he seemed a very nice guy.
Other people out in public have done the same and asked my opinion thinking I was professional, lol I don't know what gives people the idea I know what I'm doing as I spend most of my time scratching my head wondering what to do.

It made me feel pretty good when I was shooting at an event that someone asked me what paper I was shooting for. I was shooting with my 20D with a nice white lens on it.

Let me clarify what I mean about people noticing me because of shutter noise. The point and shooters were fixated on their LCD screens and the only person talking was the priest. I was firing away around 1-2 fps and I believe it must have caught their attention. :-)
I don't remember what my old DRebel sounded like (got stolen), but I do like the sound of the XT. Sounds like film SLR to me. Anyhow, I'm still a newbie. Lots to learn... I had to switch to auto mode for candids b/c I couldn't adjust to the environment fast enough.
But it's certainly a plus when the point and shooters bow down to the DLSR. :-)

The lens (mostly certain parts like, seals, type of coating used, ect) could infact dampen some of the vibration and thus reduce the noise...

That could be. All I remember is that it sounded different. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was though.

I had something similar at a Country Fair at the weekend, soon as the P&S users saw the vest, 350D, battery grip and white lens they made way without me asking, I got some good shots of the falconry display as a result.

An XT or any other SLR beating up a point and shoot is like beating up your little brother.
Sometimes your "little brother" gets a bit cheeky though with his on-board video options or something, so you need to break out a big impressive looking zoom lens or something, of course, only after a very considered appraisal of your subject :D
I'm not a pro (alas) & I sure as hell don't look like a pro & I probably don't act like a pro either, but I want my gear to be what I think is commensurate with my ability & learning curves. Ah yes, I'm lining up that 70-200 IS USM f/2.8L even as I type this..... I sat in Jessops the other day just looking at that lens for about 20 minutes while my friend was getting her pics developed there..... A day is coming when that will be my introduction to the L club :D
where was I?? Oh yes.... P&S?? We don't need no steenking P&S....

I have an xt and a 20D...in the end I think I like the xt better, save for lack of speed versus the 20D...but I could have had two other xt's!

Haha...My Canon A75 sounds just like the Canon Digital Rebel.
Since that is the sound I programmed into it. hehehehe.

I wonder what kind of looks you would get with a 1d mark II firing away at 8fps. Or maybe people mistaking it for some kind of light machine gun.

I was shooting my niece's parade and had my 100 - 400L on the 20D. I wanted a real tight closeup since she was making faces at me so I had that big bugger racked all the way out. I was shooting bursts of 4 or 5 and you should have seen the people move out of my way. Like the Red Sea parting! One couple actually moved their lawn chairs for me. <lol>
I also noticed that the parade participants were hamming it up for me - posing and such. I wasn't even that close to the road but they spotted that big white lens and assumed I was going to make them famous. The right equipment really does make it easier to at least get into position for the shot. You gotta love the white lenses!

Has anyone seen full metal jacket?
When the guy just runs up and steals the dudes camera. I'm so scared of that sort of thing happening. I doubt anyone would be able to pry my camera from my hands... but its always in the back on my head.
That's the done side of having good, expencive equipment. Especially big white lenses. Even if you know nothing about photography those lenses look expencive!
