I was talking to a buddy recently re: acquiring a Sigma lens. He's been at it a bit longer than me so I turn to him for feedback. Anyway, he tells me Sigma has quality issues -- specifically the AF goes out. He learned it 1st hand w/ 2 lenses, another buddy had one w/ the AF going out and he pointed out a few lenses online that the owner was having AF issues
So -- what's the deal? I was considering one of the 50mm lenses and the 105 macro but now, not so sure

As far as I know, if you get a good lens it is great. However, Sigma has some quality control issues, arguable some of the most inconsistent quality out there. The most common is focusing issues, such as front or back focusing. Focus going out is fairly rare. If you buy new this isn't a big problem though because you can get it replaced. I have never had bad luck with the Sigma I owned. It was a great lens. My belief is that there are many more good lenses than bad lenses though, and I would never hesitate to buy a Sigma.
Wrong forum by the way.
