Because people don't like to lose, and with a $.99 starting bid on all his lenses, that's just what this seller is counting on. :)

I think that alot of people are wary of purchasing items from online stores, so don't even price the items they are bidding on, and bid on items for what they can get them from their local Wolf/Ritz for. Not everyone frequents places like this were you can see who the "good guys" are. eBay seems very safe to people with their feed back, buyer protection ect (we are talking about what people think, not reality, so spare me your ebay sob stories. I have my own).
I do agree that the "losing" generates bids, but the buyer mighe be thinking to himself that he saved himself a thousand to several thousand dollars, and he gets 10 days to evaluate it and send it back. Hell, after seeing some of the prices for used items in the used sections of "professional" photography stores, they might be stocking items bought from ebay and putting their own 30-60-90 day warrenty on them.

It was less than $6000 once from Dell. I had it in my cart for fun but didn't pull the trigger.

I'll play devil's advocate here... There is a 30 day warranty and it is $600.00 cheaper than a new one from the lowest price retailer. That could be used to buy a nifty 50 and an 85mm f/1.8. Besides, it's always been my experience that if anything is going to go wrong with a given product that COULD be covered under a warranty, it's usually something that will fail within the first 30 days. Then generally the planned obsoletion rules apply and the failure will happen mere days after the warranty runs out.
Also, I know that before I discovered B&H and Adorama, I went into my local camera dealer and priced my Rebel T2 and they were gonna sell me one with a Q-Ray lens (28-80mm) for $359.99. I was then told about Adorama and got my Rebel with a CANON EF 28-90mm for $100.00 less. So maybe this person is perceiving a much greater discount than $600. Who knows?
Also I was looking at the marketplace section here and someone had a 70-200mm f/4.0L up for $500 and everyone was raving about how good the price is and so on. Brand new at Adorama, they are $579 and refurbished by Canon they are $499.00. So why is the one here on MP a great bargain saving $79 or nothing depending which way you go, and saving $600 or more is being compared to highway robbery?

Do a search for Canon 200mm f/1.8, including completed items and look at the variation in price. More than $1000!

I was tracking on this lens over 2 month (I 1/2 years ago). The price was from a little over 2,000 to 4,600... depends on the condition. I learned from a K.... guy:
1. Some of them were from used dept of Canon;
2. Some of them from his source has new paint job on;
3. Some of them were send to Canon or else where for lens cleaning;
4. Some of them were originally good condition (these are the one that will over 4,000).
5. Some of them is not worth to re-condition the barrel, because some chip or dent or scratch that can't be re-painted (these are the one close to 2,000).
He even send me a small touch up paint for Canon's white grey barrel, which is 99% match the barrel.;)

for what it is worth - this is a real store with real people - I've done business with them before as well so at least that part isn't risky. But the price it went for... thats another question. I bought a used 300 2.8 and now know why I got a "deal" on it. Trust me - I didn't save any money. I am now looking for a 400 2.8, and 99.999% sure I will buy new unless I buy it from a reputable place like these guys or KEH. Cheers. I also have another lens I bought used and it is a peach... so you just never know.

I no mean to say the seller is no good, because I did bought a N..F5 from that seller a while ago in very good condition and good price. Which I re-sell it in HK for USD200.00 more.
But just wonder why people will pay that much for a used 600?

Well as the one selling the $500 70-200 F4L I can tell you that buying a lens from someone on a forum such as this is more then just saving a buck. First off you know that by buying it from an enthusiast you have a lot better chance of getting a "sharp" copy vs buying one off a website. You know that someone has already tested it and it meets a photographers standard for sharpness. You also know that buy buying it from a meber of this forum you are most likely supporting that photoagrapher and his works; and that by supporting him or her you are advancing photography more so then by purchasing from a cold faceless corparation. I would rather buy a lens used from someone I have had conversations with than get a 30 day warranty thats more trouble then its worth.

the ebay thing is a good point though, and it doesnt just apply to lenses. I've seen people pay well over $300 + some ridiculous shipping fee for an ipod they could order from apple.com for $299 (w/ free shipping too!) it boggles the mind sometimes...

I can't figure out the mindset of ebay buyers. Buyers are paying prices on lenses very close to or above brand new prices. More power to the seller, I guess. I've bid on many lenses only to see the winning big exceed the price of a new one with warranty. Granted, there are good deals if you can find them, but it does not seem to be the norm. Doesn't there come a point in the bidding where it makes more sense to buy new? I really think the "thrill" of bidding takes over.

I think the over-riding mentality is that people hate to lose. Effectively, the bidding on the actual lens probably ended at around $5,500.00. After that, the bidding continued for no other reason than to "beat the other guy"...

They're saving less than $700, and not getting a warranty. Any guesses what a repair in the first year will cost? Or how long the lens'd be down? If you're going to spring for $6300 to get a lens from someone you don't know, why not pay a little more and have a known agent backing it (well, 2 - B&H and Canon)?

I agree, people it´s buying from E-Bay 2nd hand items for nearly the price of a new one and almost out of waranty. These two items were bought for almost $6300 each one. Guauu, there are a lot of people with too much money overthere ....

If you were going to spend $6,000 for 600MM, wouldn't it be worth it to buy it new? instead of buying it used on ebay, hoping you will get the lens?
