Just found this out today... maybe I'm so far in the past....but take any phone camera and point a IR remote at it and if the LED lights up (as seen thru the camera) then the remote works (or at least has a heartbeat)... found this out today whilst trying to diagnose a cablebox remote that failed... what a neat way to make an initial check on a remote.... reading about lasers and sensors I think I'd think twice before I pointed one at my 5D2...
