Hi folks,

Does it make sense to sharpen as part of raw conversion, or should this always be your last editing step??

Thanks!

I've turned off the sharpening in RSE. I prefer to apply edge sharpening as the last step.

I tend to agree.. there are times I will sharpen using the RAW converter.. but I mostly sharpen in PSCS only.

I don't care for sharpening during raw conversion. You can try this site for excellent sharpening tools from fellow POTN member, gmitchell: http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/TLRProfessionalSharpeningToolkit.htm

Some people will apply a slight sharpen during the conversion to help with editing in PS. These same people apply at least 2 phases of sharpening when doing non-RAW edits.
Sharpen right out of the gates (slight sharpen) to get rid of camera soft focus... apply edits, then do at least one phase of sharpening before saving.

If you're going to resample the image size, it doesn't make sense to sharpen before you do that.

Also, (tip) change your Photoshop settings to use Bicubic Sharper as the default resampling type. Most of the time you'll be sampling down... and this method is best for that.
If you ever upsample, just change the setting in the dialog box (not PS options) for each time you do it to Bicubic Smoother.
After that, let the USM/S-Sharpen rip.

Oh, and I tried the parameters setting on board the camera. I boosted it one mark (+1) which is the smallest change but I wasn't impressed. The effect is heavy handed and I will only worry about sharpening at the end of the workflow from now on, not the beginning.

Has anyone ever set the DSLR parameters down one mark (-1)??
