Wow! The S80 has 1024x768 video at 15fps. Some day I'll be saying Wow! the S<whatever> has 1920x1080 video at 30fps with the new DigicIII chip. Don't cha just love technology?

1920x1080 is not any standard resolution size.

But the DSLR's CAN do video ... well sort of anyway. This one has been posted before, but take a look at the movie this guy made with his 20D.

His site has some other (non-DSLR) videos that are pretty fun to look at in addition to this one.

1920x1080 is not any standard resolution size.Sure it is. That's wide screen HDTV resolution.

I beg to differ. That's HDTV.

I've seen this flip screen (movie) before. Sorry, but for me its 24fps or more. But if they made our DSLR's do 30fps at 1920x1080, it would kill Canons commercial business. So don't look for it soon.

David,

You aren't expecting video mode on an SLR are you?

Making them do 30fps might kill their commercial business but they'd make a fortune in shutter replacements...

Some people still don't understand how an SLR works. Is it me or is this forum dumbing down these days? No offense meant by the way.

Some people still don't understand how an SLR works. The term SLR is growing more and more old fashioned, as is SLR technology in general. The primary difference between a digital SLR and a digital EVF camera is that the SLR camera uses a mirror to reflect the image through the viewfinder, while the EVF camera uses the sensor. Both display the image as seen through the lens, but since the EVF camera uses the sensor, it is far more accurate view than an SLR. It is also not slowed down by the mirror, which enables them to shoot video. In the future, maybe 5-10 years, I think most digital cameras will use EVFs, and by then most will be able to do video as well and ultra high frame rates that cannot be attained with a mirror system, but they will probably still be refered to as SLRs because they use the same lens for framing and image acquisition. Either that, or the term SLR will just disappear and they will call the new generation of camera EVFs or TTLs or something.

You haven't been specific so i'll try to cover all bases.

The 'fact' that CMOS sensors can't do video is a complete myth.Canon's current DSLR sensors wouldn't be able to but that's simply the way they have chosen to make them.... for now.
There are several high definition/digital movie cameras around at the moment that use CMOS sensors

The mirror is blocking the view. This is an easy one of course, and very likely not what you are refering to

The lack of viewfinder as Phil mentions
This one is also dead easy- remember they have a screen on the back......DOH;)
