So heres the deal. I need money, and its going to kill me to sell my gear which will give me some money now, but later down the road I will have to rebuy gear. My uncle wants me to scan all the family photos from 1990-now. Any ideas on what I should charge for something like this? Hourly fee or an over all rate?

Only thing I could suggest is have a word with your uncle and try to decide a cost.

He might be expecting a freebie but it sounds like you are in no position to provide it.

What types of media? Prints, negatives, slides? What will you be using for scanning and what is your Uncle's expectations for results? Do be aware that this can be a very time consuming process, especially if you're looking at high res scans. Assuming that your Uncle is willing to pay and not looking for a family freebie, you could go to a site such as ScanCafe.com for pricing info and adjust accordingly.

Prints, a scanner thats being loaned to me which has proved to be high enough quality for him to be happy with. I'm not worried about the time because I'm unemployed currently.

Sounds like you've got it covered. Prints won't produce as high quality an image, but scanning prints is much faster than scanning negs or slides.

Yeah, scanning prints is a piece of cake. As long as your Uncle isn't expecting to make enlargements you'll be fine.
