5D specs on file sizes VS. 10D

Quick question if anyone knows. Why should I buy the 5D if I already get 18MG Files from shooting with my 10D?RAW JPEG (Fine) JPEG (Normal) RAW + JPEG Large 12.9MB 4.6MB 2.3MB 17.5MB Medium - 2.7MB 1.4MB - Small - 2.0MB 1.0MB -
If this is a 12 or 13 magapixal camera then why are the files not any larger? Are the files more refind?

I am trying to figure out why your 10D files are almost twice what my 10D shoots at.

However, I have noted that the RAW+jpeg files sizes from my 1DsMkII are just over twice what my 10D produces, despite having almost 3 times the pixels.
With 6.3MP 10D, my average file size was 6-8MB
With 16.6MP 1DsMkII my average file size is 14-16MB

So I am suspecting a better RAW compression algorithm in the camera with the DIGIC II processor. So the 5D should be similiar compression ratio or file sizes around 11-13MB in similiar modes.

Thank you for your info. I guess looking at an image in photoshop is not the same as having the image in your camera. Well I get about 32 images from a 256MB CF so that would mean I am getting 8MB per shot. Hey I'm still learning. By the way I am looking to partisipate in some new courses are you aware of any? From editing to shooting.

Just always want to strive for perfection. I will probabley never get there but it is the journey and the desination as they say. But who are they. LOL

I get about 7 MB RAW and 3-4 MB JPEG LF from my 20D. My D60 (no RAW+JPEG) takes about 7 MB RAW too, and it's 25% fewer pixels. So I don't think there can be any question that the compression algorithm for RAW has gotten better. But why are you concerned with the absolute file size? The 5D image contains about twice as many pixels as the 10D, so it can be enlarged, using the same processing and resolution settings, 1.4x more (linear) than the 10D's image. Remember - bytes and pixels aren't directly related.

Thanks again. I just want to make sure when I buy my next camera that I am getting the best bang for the buck. However your explaination has got my mind in a defferent place then where I was and I thank you for that. This site and you have opened my eyes to the possiblitly of getting better at what I do.

Do you know of any on-line or distance education courses I can take? I have been thinking about the NYC Photogaphic Insitute. Do you know of anyone that has gone there?

No direct knowledge of any on-line/distance courses. I've heard NYIP well-spoken of, which I would certainly hope would be the case for an organization that's been around for years. There should be at least one thread on remote courses around here - maybe in Talk About Photography; searching for threads on photogfraphy courses should bring up a lot of results.

It sounds to me like you have taken RAW files that are about 6MB in size and converted them to TIFF files. The RAW files that I shoot with my 300D are typically around 6-7MB and when I convert them to TIFF (8-bit I think), the end up being around 18MB.
