I wonder, does it help if the subject is further away rather than closer?

looking at these examples (http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/11/16/beautiful-examples-of-tilt-shift-photography/) it seems best to be at a distance and elevated; I doubt the built in mode will ever be as good as these produced with a tilt shift lens.

Right, but it is something to play/experiment with, at least you can have a go at it at no additional cost.

Something I didn't see in the manual. Do these effects just work on jpegs, or do they work on RAW files, too?

For some reason, I just don't like the tilt shift or "miniature" effect at all. I can appreciate that some might like it, but really I can't understand why.

the novelty does wear off pretty quickly :)

Can you change the blur lines from vertical to horizonal with the G12? Also it seems to go from being in focus to OOF to quick, or something else, as this doesn't seem to have the miniature effect, at least to me.

Yes, you have the ability to do the effect horizontal or vertical and you also have the control over how wide or narrow you want the focus path.

As shown above by the link to some real awesome tilt shift shots, is that you want to be elevated and shoot at an angle towards your subject.
