View Full Version : an exercise in LIMITATIONS:

Thought I'd try this out and see what happens.

I'd like to do a series of exercises where I/WE set the limits of what we are going to shoot, and for them to be quite specific.

For example, I might limit the exercise to using a specific lens, at a certain time of day, in a certain setting. The idea is to limit the variables so we can see how people see similar things differently and also how creatively they use the equipment they have, which I think would be invaluable to new photographers who often feel they won't take good images because they don't have all the gear.

So for this exercise, here are the limitations:

1. Your DSLR
2. one lens, a 50mm
3. you may use a tripod if you wish.
3. Area : the street where you live
4. Any time of day
5. Can be people, animals or objects, however, not models.
6. Theme: Show the last days of summer in your neighborhood.

If this works well and people enjoy it maybe others can make suggestions for the next time.

any questions? just ask me!

Sounds great. I have an idea, but will have to wait for the weekend to try it out.

this sounds doable... just post the images in here?

The biggest problem is lens selection. I don't own a 50mm, closest is my 17-40. Other than that, sounds like fun.

maybe just use the lens at 40? and be sure to note that. or wait until we do a 17-40 exercise?

So does a a zoom set to 50mm qualify, or does it have to be a 50mm prime?

One other question . . .
Same focal length regardless of sensor size?

Well this has been up since april, and yet no images. I think september is late enough in the year. besides the changes around here are coming rather fast. So here is my contribution.

Canon D30
28-80mm EF II @ 50mm
f.9, 1/200
iso 100
Sunpak flash unit

This is a Gulf Fritillary on a Callistemon...

no, this thread's only been up for a few weeks at most. I don't know why it's not showing posting dates on the thread and post... i joined in april, that's the date you are seeing.

but that's a nice photo almo, i like that.

i'll be posting some hopefully this weekend.

would it have better if i had said "showing the first stages of fall" rather than the "last days of summer"? i guess it's all how you choose to see it.

Oh, sorry about the date confusion.

I will post a lager version of that image, as the butterfly was quite ragged looking, with chunks of wing missing as if he had had the last bits of summer beaten out of him. That's what it said to me anyway.

Thanks!

yes, please post a larger one, i'd like to see the detail on the butterfly. :)

it's hard for me to shoot this (and I came up with the idea, D'OH!) because i live in the Bay Area of California and it always looks the same here. it's in the details where you can see the changes and i need to go out and find it. :)

Here is one taken in late August, Seaside Heights, NJ right where I live.... it is very representative of what the "natives" of my area see each clear night on the bay off the Atlantic Ocean. The bay looks into Toms River, NJ (my Hometown). Hope you like. 20D with 50MM f1.4. The actual image is a little bigger and was cropped a bit..... but in the spirit of things, I think you'll get the idea....

i'm sorry that i haven't been able to get any images up in this thread. i've been terribly busy, but more so than that, fall is *just* starting to arrive here, visually speaking that is.

so hopefully an image or two this week. thanks to everyone who participated thus far. :)
