I took this shot of Red Tarn below Helvellyn on a relatively nice April day.
Striding Edge can be seen behind Red Tarn with ( correct me if I'm wrong ) St Sunday Crag behind Striding Edge.

For our international brothers a tarn is a small mountain lake.

A more traditional shot of Striding Edge taken earlier that day.

I really like the first one, the clouds produced some nice even lighting.

First one gets my vote. Looks like it could be a travel poster. Both a very nice though.

Great shots of a great place, its always misty when I get up there, plus i'm a cowed and always go up from Thirelmere.

Geoff, it is a great place especially on a nice clear day.
For me the only way up Helvellyn is by Striding Edge and back down via Swirral Edge ( and for good measure a run up Catstye Cam ).
On a fine summers day it is not dangerous, especially if you use the paths around the dodgy bits. You can see such a path to the right in the second shot.
In wet, windy or icy conditions then only the experienced should attempt it.

Brings back some memories for me, i've been accross the edge myself, but was disapointed at the top of Helvellyn, it was a white-out with the mist. The walk from Patterdale was great and the views from 'the hole in the wall' where u can rest are amazing.....nice pics....

I can't wait to set foot in Scotland once again. Hopefully by that time I'll have my 20D and get some great pics like you have!

Fantastic shots, reminds me of my younger years, I spent many a happy time in the area. Nice to see a landscape picture that I recognise and can relate to. TFS

Somebody once landed a small plane up there, that would have been a good day to have a camera with you, mind it would have been an old camera.

Beautiful - the first one is great with the moody sky, but the second one really does it for me!

Fantastic shots. Looks like something right out of the Lord of The Rings. Very Beautiful and rugged country.
