Here are a few of my first set of pictures. The first one is one of a bunch I got of them playing, pretty neat pictures!! I think the 17-85 Kit Lens was a good choice.

Well it costs a heck of a lot more, so I hope it takes better pictures. I haven't tried either personally so can't speak from experience. But the 17-85 is an IS lens the other is not...

the 17-85 is many times better than the 18-55 (in my opinion). costs about 5 times more, too! ^_^

The 17-85 has IS (Image Stabiliser) and is considered by some to be overly expensive. However, it's a bit better value if purchased as a kit lens with the camera.

Short answer to your question is yes the 17-85mm is a better lens and with most everything you pay for it being better. For the money, the kit 18-55mm is a decent lens but you WILL move up from the kit lens, trust me.

I always visit Fred Miranda's website to readup on lenses - I've found it a very valuable source of info. Have a search on google for fmreviews !

Congrats on the 20D. BTW you've got some handsome looking dogs and you really captured them well.
