Shot this for our campus newspaper, we're doing an article on rising gas prices.

More here: http://lifein2x3.livejournal.com/194588.html

Doing some numbers crunching, I figured out that $3.05 USD/Gal is roughly $0.80 USD/liter, £0.44 GBP/liter, $0.95 CAD/liter, $1.07 AUS/liter, and €0.65/liter, for those of you overseas or in Canada. To put it in an international perspective, what do you guys pay for gasoline where you live, in local units?

Extorting us AU$1.32 per litre for mid grade unleaded.

Spent AU$1259 last month on fuel. Up about $50-$70 because of rises.

I saw regular gas prices over $1.19CDN/ltr with my very own eyes in Toronto around 11am. It dropped back down to $1.03 in the evening. It was around $0.95 24hrs ago. What a scam...

And I thought I was getting ripped off in the desert :o

I think it's 'only' $1.35 per litre here for premium unleaded. the company issue Mobil cards so i don't actually pay pump price but what's the lowest price in the state at the time I fill.

$1.20/litre CDN and rising fast!
The thing that worries me most about oil supply is not the price of gas, but that virtually everything around us, from clothing, to computers, to cameras, to building supplies are made from oil by-products (ie, plastics). This is something we often overlook.

Normally, California (and other west coast states in PAD5) pay the most for gas in the USA. The cost varies about 20-30 cents a gallon but I have seen $3.19/gallon recently for 87 octane. But I can see that the gas companies have finally realized that if we can pay that much in California so can the folks everywhere else in the USA. The real laugh is that every time this happens the government begins an "investigation" to see if there is collusion by going to the energy companies and asking them to check into it ... can you guess what the energy companies say at the end of their "investigations" into themselves? :-) And don't ask the vice president to reveal what he knows or who he met with regarding enerby pricing ... he's so ashamed of his involvement that he's claiming immunity! What a hoot.

Here in Quebec we have just hit $1.50/Liter.
I don't see how increases of $0.42 in the space of 3 days can be justified.
The big Oil Companies are ripping us off and the government is doing nothing to stop it.
It was announced on the news that our PM is going to increase the production of gas to help out the U.S., but what about us. The sshortage in the states does not affect us so why are we paying for it???

vcutag

I'd like to think the increase is so oil companies can raise money to sink into repairing the ruined infrastructure down in the Gulf.

Then again, I'd also like to believe that people are basically good and give a damn about their fellow man. I know that increase wasn't from the government, so it has to be the oil companies.

Its not bad enough that they are increasing the price of gas, for no apparent reason, other than for another ultra-expensive hotel in the desert, where the room rent starts at $100,000.00.(a night). now we are facing another problem in this area(Florida). Not enough gas to go around. There are many places in my immediate area that have run out.

75D, I agree with everything you said.
Wow, you are paying 30c more a litre than we are in central/west canada.
But then again, we in N.A. have had it soft compared to most countries, especially the UK.
Atleast in the UK they are smart enough to drive small diesels rather than the large SUV's (and jeeps) that we in N.A. all want to drive.

$3.39/gal for diesel at the "cheap" station last night in Buellton, California, which is about 30 miles north of Santa Barbara. I have a little Honda Civic to commute but I also have a Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4 diesel shortbed that is getting a little pricey to drive.

I just today payed the most I've ever paid for a half a tank. 6.8 gal for $21.15 at $3.05.9 per gallon for the cheap regular here in Bakersfield, CA. What I don't understand is that alot of the gas is made right here in Bakersfield and I can get gas cheaper if I go somewhere out of town where they have to truck it in.

Definate gouging going on right now.
How can gas stations increase prices 15% - 20% overnite, when it can take months for price increase to their suppliers. When oil prices drop, and the price at the pump doesn't drop, that is the excuse the gas stations always give. Actually I think it's their suppliers that are gouging the stations too.

Central West New South Wales (Australia) prices vary from $1.35 down to $1.04. The latter is for 8c/litre discount at the Woolworths Petrol Plus centres, where they give 4c/litre with their shopping dockets, and another 4c for using Visa Card. Every cent counts, and it's all quality Caltex petrol. It's gonna get worse before it get any better. I think I'd better start riding my trusty old Honda4 again - 60mpg on a trip! Yes!

I know diesel gets double the mileage of regular, but people always tell me "it's dirty".
However, most of europe uses diesel cars. Do they burn cleaner or something? Or is their diesel refined that much better? I've always wondered that.

Funny, I was doing a similar exercise on my own yesterday. We live about 3 hours from the coast and have been dealing with spot shortages of gasoline due to distribution glitches. I took this photo yesterday afternoon.

FotOz

Diesel may 'appear' to be dirty, but that's only because the injectors of the respective vehicles are not clean. Diesel does not give off carbon monoxide, so it's safer in poorly ventilated environments. It's only the Irish who try to gas themselves with diesel exhausts, but only end up with congestion on the lungs. (Joke, joke guys. Don't reform the IRA for my sake!)

To put it in an international perspective, what do you guys pay for gasoline where you live, in local units?

Yesterday it hit $1.19 CAD/litre here in Vancouver, and 2 days ago it reached $1.55 CAD/litre in Quebec City. I don't want to do the conversion to USD. The high numbers scare me as they are.

I don't believe we see anything like competition amoung the oil companies ... but as I have said before, every investigation is done by the oil companies themselves or those on their payroll and I can guarantee that they will never report, "We made a huge windfall profit as the direct result of Katrina and the suffering of hundreds of thousands in the Gulf" even though every man Jack of us can see that's exactly the case! I fear that the only effective responses are either to regulate/nationalize the oil industry or to find ways to dramatically reduce our reliance on petroleum ... I'm for the latter ... let 'em drown in their petrol!

3.20USD however it had been twenty cents more when the Governor advised gas stations to keep records of purchases because he was going to audit stations to see if the pricing is fair. Within hours prices dropped. I don't know, how do oil companies report record profits when the cost of raw materials is at its highest.

DwightMcCann
4th of September 2005 (Sun), 13:07
Dave, in quarterly reports! And don't forget that most of the executives get evil bonuses when the company posts bigger profits ... which the energy companies seem to do even if they are disintegrating in debt (look at Enron as one example.) It is generally not illegal in the western world to squeeze customers through whatever means you can contrive and then to whine like a stuck pig when The People decide to regulate you or even just monitor you. That is what capitalism is all about. Has its up sides and down sides, eh? I'm hoping that we start using less fossil fuel, even if the energy companies find new ways to screw us, since I think we are destroying the Earth with our reckless consumption. The Earth can only support about a billion people and we already have about eight or nine. [He now dons his asbestos suit and steps smartly out the door before the flames get too hot.]

I think the logic being expressed to justify the increases is just amazing. On the radio I heard that pricing is determined not so much by the price paid for gas on hand at the dealers but rather, the price LIKELY to be paid for the next tanker load. However, when asked why the price remains high long after the wholesale price goes down, this individual had the brass to say it was because the dealer had to recoup the higher price paid for the gas currently on hand.

So . . . what goes up doesn't seem to come down under the same set of rules. I'm afraid it's speculation, pure and simple and has a pretty loose relation to actual market supplies.

Haha, maybe it has something to do with gas prices ... until recently, Diesel was also cheaper than regular gas, so a lot of people had a huge incentive to use it.

Diesel cars have come *a long way*. No more the old tractor or truck sound, smell and behaviour in driving, when you're driving a leading edge (i.e. European or very recent Japanese) car. If you're riding one of the sportier cars, it als has higher torque than a V8 ... makes for nice acceleration.

However ... I still don't like Diesel cars. The stuff still smells awful, and you have to handle it when filling up. So no diesel car for this European

Best regards,
Andy

see the problem with the oil comayns is this. the lumbar comapny makes a product for 50 cents then marks it up 20 making it 70 cents then somethign happens that cost them 10 cent smore so they mark it up 10 more cents making hte produc 80 cents well what the oil comapnys do is they make the proudoct for 50 cents mark it up 20 cents making it 70 cents then the when something happens that only cost a 10 cent markup they mark it up 15 cents makign it 85 cents now what they will do when what ever happens is no more they drop it back only 10 cents so now they are always 5 cents ahead.. and they will keep doign this over and over and now gas is closing in at 3 a gallon where i live...
