I received some tips from some of the pro’s on this forum when I last posted some shots of my first day at the races , the criticism was mainly centred on the shutter speed being too high on my panning shots.
I have been back to the bike races today are these any better.

1st one is the best of the lot, is there any reason the others look very grainy? looks too me like they were slightly out of focus and you've used a bit too much unsharp mask, 100 or 200ISO shouldn't give that much grain

That no 1 is spot on, try to start around 1/500's and work you way down to 1/250's you will get more keepers. on a tight bend you cannot see much of the spokes so 1/500's will still look good. I am stuck to F8 as my lens gives the sharpest pictures there and above
Got this yesterday of Nev at Croft trackday.

Thanks for your comments,I was trying to post the slowest shutter speed here's one without so much smart sharpen.

that's a better one :)
the thing with slow shutters (1/60s etc) is that they show up any movement other than the direction your're panning, even if it's tiny, so where motion blur is good, you might have stuffed the rest of the shot up and got the subject blurred as well as the background

I must be doing somthing wrong, the photos are much cleaner before I post them. the shot of Rob's is much cleaner than mine (and much better) but the same file size.

my shots are sharpened as follows
amount 100 - 200
radius 0.3 - 0.4
threshhold 0 - 1
just a starting point,
resized to 1024 X 637 (bicubic sharper)
save for web, medium (60) setting in ps. give under 100k file size.
i am with dave the first is great, the others look as if something has gone very wrong.

Ok Rob try these.
There is less sharpening and I have chosen them for quality rarther than slow shutter speed.
The light on the day was a little overcast.
Someone tell me that I am not waisting my time.

no time wasted - like the kawasaki shot... nothing to do with image quality... just love the bike - and you happened to have a nice shot of it.

I will join the queue, you are not wasting your's or anyone elses time, those are great shots, i prefer slightly overcast days, less highlights to worry about.
you are on the right road. you can now tell you have a quality lens on a quality body.
i see you use adobe rgb hope yo are converting the image before save.
you are shoting more or less as i do but am stuck to F8 and above.

Thanks Rob and Croasdail.
I'll try again on the next track day.
It took your shots above Rob, for me to see how poor my shots were.
Alan.
