After weeks of reading many decidedly mixed opinions and debating whether to place an order, yesterday I received from B&H a Canon EF 28/1.8. My son and I went to Royal Oak (a nearby suburb north of Detroit) today to walk around and take some pictures, and I got a chance to try out the lens. So far, I think I like it. I need to do more testing under low light conditions, which is mostly what I got it for.

Here are a few samples, which are at http://www.pbase.com/rs2/miscellaneous. Let me know what you think.

I find my 28 f/1.8 is a bit soft up to f/2.8, but not so soft as to make it useless at those apertures, I just try to stay away from bright highlights. It's a great low light lens.

See the example 100% crops. One at f/1.8 and one at f/2.8. No sharpening applied to either of them.

Thanks for the examples. Your 2.8 shot is clearly sharper than the one at 1.8. I will keep that in mind.

BTW, what part of Scotland are you from? My second-great-grandparents Smith came to Glasgow from Odessa around 1900, lived out their lives there and are buried there. My great-grandfather moved to Toronto, and then Detroit (my luck).

It would be interesting to see if your copy is similar to mine... I've seen others report good and bad copies of this lens. I took these shots deliberately to illustrate the softness using some harsh reflected light.

Well, I consider myself to be from Glasgow, but I'm maybe 10 miles out from the city centre, so I'm a country bumpkin really! :)
