I'm looking at taking a winter trip to Yellowstone and will be purchasing a 500mm F4L Lens. I'm looking for a recommendation for a sturdy lightweight tripod. I'm concerned that my 3001BPro isn't heavy enough and I really don't want to lug around my 3035 tripod (9.5 lbs).
Owner's of the 500mm, what are you using?
Thanks.

I use the Gitzo 1548 and a Wimberley, but if I need to save weight, I've had reasonable luck with the 1227 and the Arca Swiss. I have the IS version of the lens, however, and if I extend the tripod to near full length, then the IS is key to minimizing shake. With just one section extended, the 1227 works quite well.
Note that I dont use this combo much, as it is quite rare for me to have enough capacity to carry the 500/4 but not the 1548 - if I am traveling light, I usually take the 100-400, and if I can carry the 500/4, I can usually take the 1548 as well.
Cheers,
Vandit

Thanks. I'm torn about how to handle this. I decided to "punt" and get more expert help:)

I purchased a Velbon 630 carbon fiber tripod and a Bogen / Manfrotto 3421 Heavy Duty Gimbal Type Telephoto Lens Support (Quick Release). I find this is very sturdy and is not as expensive as the Gitzo tripod and Wimberley head.
