Greetings- I took my first pix last night with the 10D..and noticed a very strange effect. I was using the 50mm 1.8 and doing my pre/post settings reset test..and noticed that if I pointed the camera towards the direction of the setting sun -to try a backlit shot- when the lens was set in Manual focus, when pressing the shutter half way, the focusing points would start randomly lighting up and the beeps sounding. Some strong refracted light could have been getting into the lens... I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?

Which focus point did you have chosen? If you have all seven chosen (which allows the camera to automatically select the closest object as the point of focus) then the camera might have been seeking the proper point to focus on. Given the strong backlight, it might not have been able to find a high-contrast area for focus.

I too have noticed this effect while focusing and shooting in manual, but it does it all the time! High or low contrast, the focusing point flashes and the beeps "beep." There does not appear to be any image problem however: maybe the camera is beeping with delight at the great shots! Canon has created a new algorithm. Sorry that I cannot post any of the great shots though.

Hi-
I did not have a focus point chosen...and the custom fuctions were just reset..so the center should be default.
AND, the camera (50mm lens) was on manual focus.
Just trying to see if this is a problem which is not a problem- or my camera is not well.
Thanks-
Bob
PS: would love it if someone would try this with a 50mm 1.8. -ahh, just caught the post above...so this happend to someone else..Good!

I didn't get any beeping, but I too noticed that the peripheral AF points would appear to light up in strong backlit situations. I tried it again and if I have the centre point over a very bright area and the outside points over a dark area, I can see them faintly glow. It seems to be a light leak to the other AF point LED areas and only occurs if the centre point is over a very bright area. Maybe it can detect how bright it is and boosts the brightness of the red LED to compensate so it's more visible in bright situations? The leak isn't visible if all points are over bright areas or all over dark areas.

Interesting Mickey- This effect though- is where the focus points are actively selecting randomly..and the beep is going off every time it lands on the next point.
I have not tried my other lenses yet (only the 50mm).
I'm still not able to get the twain driver to install on win2K either. (Pc with 98' updated to win2K)
Thanks-

Bob,
If you had just reset CF, the all 7 points would have been active, I believe.

I just noticed that the beep and flashing only happens when the subject is in focus even though I have the lens on Manual Focus, Center Point Focus. Could be an extra aide to ensuring Focus! If you have multiple focus points that could be tricky.

I had the same thing happen when I was shooting some test patterns taped to the wall and my focusing was set on manual. However, I noticed this happening only when the image was in focus. Since my EOS Elan IIe did the same thing (i.e. confirm nanual focus), I didn't think anything of it. However, what struck me as a little different from the Elan IIe was the fact that the 10D didn't just blink and beep once like the Elan IIe, but it did it every time I moved the focusing ring, even a bit, trying to "home" in on the focus point. I thought maybe the 10D is a little more "sensitive" than the Elan IIe is.

Gentlemen- You have answered the question! The 10D focus confirm beep/flash works in Manual focus mode. If you have reset all the settings like I just did, all 7 focus points are active- and all beep and flash...and I assume that if one is selected, that one will flash every time you pass through the focus point while moving the focus ring.
Viola!
