Hello everyone!
I was wondering if anyone knew someplace that rents cameras in Phoenix? My wife is down there for a friend's birthday party and my Mark III came up with an err99 on her. She's supposed to be the unofficial photographer and she didn't take any of my other two cameras. The party is tomorrow, so I can't mail her one of our other cameras.
Thanks for any help!

A buddy from work called and had a shoot lined up for his American Legion/Motorcycle group photo. The photog cancelled and he is in need of a replacement for 9am in the morning. There will be 40 people and motorcycles.
I have no idea about pay or if it's charity, so I would go into to it from the charity side, and if paid, all the better.
PM or post and I will put you in contact with the gentleman for more info.
It's in the 32nd and Bell area.
Kenny.

I'm guessing 32st right? if I wasn't working it would be a nice reason to go for a ride to there and take the shot.

Nothing against Bruce Dorn...very accomplished guy... but... I can see $200 for the day... maybe... with something for portfolio building... maybe toss in a Bruce Dorn stripbox for the $400?
I've watched him in the Photovision dvd's and if the class is going to be something along those lines... then $100-200 would be fair.
But... lol... who am I? I just know I won't be attending. :)

Hmmm, not that I want to be the center of attention or anything, 'cause I do still think of myself as one of the FNGs around here, but it seem like whenever I bring up the money aspect of things I just get dead silence back. Am I violating some unwritten rule or something?
I know that my business model does not fit with what most 'pro photographers' are looking to do, but I assure you it is quite inline with the well established market for this type of business across the country for motorsports event photography.
Personally I'd much rather be making a living at this like guys like Mark Rieblas (http://markjrebilas.com/blog/), and I think I have the potential for that, but it isn't in the cards at the moment.
Anyhow, would appreciate some feedback if I am out of line or committing some sort of faux pas.
But if nobody's really interested, then I suppose that's just fine too. :)

Dean... I missed it?
I remember talking about offering to cover specific riders for the day? I know the guy I shot dirt track racing did this... he would approach the racers at the track and offer to shoot them for "X" amount during the day. He shot other people as well... but.. once he got the images he needed he put them online... the people he covered that is....
Another thing he did... he would print 11x14's and pass them off to the drivers... with a small watermark and his contact info... this showed them the level of his work and broke the ice.
Just some thoughts.
What were your original questions?

Dean, I'm happy for you. I'm glad that you are making some profit in what you are doing, and it is TOUGH making money when you shoot riders. Your are competing for their fuel, tire, repair, upgrade budget.
If you are getting anyone to buy prints, I'd be estatic!

I was responding to sundevilstormin's comment on your computations on the ROI of the Groupon deal. Great write-up, btw. He said, "Is anyone making any money in this biz?" I know his question was probably rhetorical, but I thought it might be useful to mention my situation in that I am making a little money, but not in the traditional way. I suppose my thought was to get some ideas going on how one can find a niche that will bring in some cash. Like Kenny and his aerial photography.
I am quite confident that there are dozens more sporting events that you could cover using my formula every month and put several hundred dollars in your pocket - its just a matter of investing the time and developing the market. I already have the system down and all of the infrastructure, I just need skilled and motivated photographers.
And thanks for the suggestions. I have considered offering packages to riders that would get them more attention and have also considered printing samples. One of the guys who shoots for me made a 20x30 of a shot I got of him and we showed it at the riders meeting before the trackday. I am sure that helped make some sales. During the last event, I took my iPad with me and part way through the day I uploaded several photos straight from the camera to the iPad and walked through the pits showing them to some potential customers. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive and I am sure contributed to my sales for that event.
I really could make more money at this. I have several ideas that are sure to increase sales, but I am up against that old work/life balance conundrum. So I need to figure out how to work smarter, not harder. I can't really increase my time commitment, so I need to figure out the ways to implement my business that maximize the return on my time investment.

Thanks Brian - I do sell some prints, but between Zenfolio/MPix's high costs and my desire to make the prints affordable for my customers, I make very little on selling prints. I don't have the time or desire to do my own fulfillment, so that has been a conscious decision to give up that potential avenue for profit.
I do have an Epson Stylus Photo 1400, which makes pretty nice 13x19s. I primarily bought it to make prints for myself, but I could use it to make some samples to show customers.

Dean - I thinks it's always nice when soneone 'opens their books' a bit for the rest of us to peek at. I live in far SE Valley and have watched the EV bike track on Ironwood add more and more to thrie site. They now have a round track for derbies and striaght track for dirt / mud drags in addition to the moto-cross track(s). I have been wanting to get over there to shoot some high-fliers on the jumps.
Someone mentioned that prints sales will compete with the fule, tires budget, but when I see a big event that track draws riders with LOTS of cash... bling'ed out 5th-wheel toy haulers, RV's with awnings and TV's...
there IS some cash out in them thar' hills... now just to go mine it a bit.
(shoot some well-lit shots of rider in the air and project them onto BIG white backdrop for all to see)

good analysis Hatch... is there any way to make money in this biz!?
got my Chinese Cokin-P knock-off "Chokin" filter pack, 3NDs and some Grads. Went to Brown and Idaho to see how sunset would develop - got rained out.
anyhow. Took the baseline shot at low ISO, highF, like 1.3 sec
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5269/5597538492_0f758b4e1d_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sundevilstormin/5597538492/)
then stacked the 1,2 and 8 filters at once, got bad magenta color cast but used Custom WB function to all but eliminate it. Got this:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5190/5596957537_9293fd1c8c_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sundevilstormin/5596957537/)
and boy did I learn that the filters must be spotless clean or else the high F-stop shots pick up every speck! Lot of Smart cloning
I need some filters badly. Which set did you get and where did you buy them from? Ebay? Do you have a link to the set you bought and would you recommend them for the minimal price you paid vs expensive filters? I'm buying another house right now and all my funds are tied up in down payment so i could use some cheap stuff for the time being.

I stayed at one of the hotels at Bryce in 2009... on 4th of July weekend. I wouldn't suggest that. It was $160 a night. Haha. There are few hotels there tough (I can think of 3 different hotels right at the canyon). Then there are a couple along the way, once you turn off SR89A (I think that's the highway) towards Bryce Canyon.
As for Zion, I haven't been there in a while. I know there are hotels around there also, but have no idea about price or anything like that.

Not exactly close, but I loved this place. Cliff Dwellers Lodge.
http://www.cliffdwellerslodge.com/main/
I stayed there to do a little off road riding, hanging out with the wife and a friend and a plan to run up to Kanab to see that place where Michael Vick's dogs were staying (Best Friends Animal Society). Little did I know that from Kanab, Zion is only another 30 miles. I zipped on up on the motorcycle and did a pass through the place.
I loved Cliff Dwellers beause you are really out in the middle of nowhere. It's beautiful and quiet. Also, the Colorado is only a couple miles away at most, down one of several dirt roads in the area. You can hang over the edge and have a look down without anyone freaking out. There is also a restaurant.
A couple pics.
Cliff Dwellers at night.

Is it a foreclosure? I've been poking around at homes in the Phoenix area and I was humored by things I saw. Many people who are foreclosed upon take every.......god.........damn......thing out of the homes, including ceiling fans. What the hell are you going to do with a ceiling fan when you are now homeless? All I could envision was Steve Martin in The Jerk, leaving the house with all the stuff......
"And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray... And this paddle game. - The ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need... And this remote control. - The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need... And these matches. - The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control, and the paddle ball... And this lamp. - The ashtray, this paddle game, and the remote control, and the lamp, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The paddle game and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches for sure. Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need."

Thanks for thinking of me Doug! Unfortunately, it looks like CL has pulled the ad.
I do, however, have a newborn shoot scheduled for this weekend, and possibly a group of sisters as well. Frank will hate this, but I'm doing these sessions gratis'.
I don't know why the ad was pulled?
Looked like a legit business offering packages for a reasonable price. I don't know the photographer, so for all I know they could be offering exceptional quality for a very reasonable price and that seems fine to me.
I don't think the photographer offering these packages is/was doing anything wrong, they see a audience and market to it. Nothing wrong with that.
I'm not sure you could actually turn a profit charging the prices they listed, but when you ask most people about this type of thing, most think 100% is profit . . .
Very few factor insurance, travel time, equipment cost, education, post processing time and the expensive computer, let alone expensive camera equipment costs into the equation.
It just went towards the discussion we were having about how to compete with these type of photographers who don't have a studio or much overhead to speak of and if they really did a cost-of-doing-business calculation they would find that at the rates they charge they are losing money . . . (like Frank's Groupon example)
Who knows, maybe the photographer has a very well paying IT job during the day, and just does this "photography" stuff during nights and weekends (wink, wink)
ah come on, it's a joke, lighten up. (does this mean you are going to un-friend me on facebook?)

Hope you are doing well up there in Utah.... still waiting for you to break out with a new set of landscape photos....

I have been in some that they took the molding off of the window frames and such.... crazy!
I bet that was a nice area to ride!

Speaking of houses here is our new house. We are in under writing right now and should close next Friday with keys in hand, can't wait. We are moving to Tempe (Southern/McClintock) area.
Built in '78 so it's older but it's a flip house fully remodeled.
4 bed, 2 bath, 3 car garage, 2200sq ft, block home on 10,000sq ft lot with 10ft diving pool in back and a huge covered patio. Fully upgraded with new tile, new carpet, new paint, new electrical, new plumming, new light fixtures, popcorn ceiling removed, fresh paint inside/out and the pool acid washed with fresh cool decking repainted, new garage doors/opener and fresh epoxy flooring in the garage as well. It's turnkey and ready to be moved into.
Click on any image to view the entire gallery on my website of our new house. Were moving from Laveen so it'll be nice to be back in the hustle and bustle of things.

Is that a street lamp in the backyard? hmmmm
Hah speaking of, there is one in the front driveway as well. I was asking the home inspector what he thought of that as well. It's an actual street light just like out on the road. We are thinking the previous owner may have worked for the city of Tempe or something because it's not your typical light from home depot, it's a giant street light and at the base of it is a light switch to turn it off and on and also an outlet. We were wondering if it was running off city power so we killed the main switch to the house and tested to see if there was power there and there wasn't so it's connected to the house.
Luckily we can turn it off and on manually and not have it on all the time because that would be quite annoying. But when we do need a lot of light back there it will be nice to have.

Hello Arizona People! I haven't been on the forum much lately. Too busy trying to buy a house!
I have had a request from a friend back east for suggestions for hotels or lodges near Zion and Bryce. I haven't made it up there yet and I thought I would ask if any of you had any suggestions. I'd appreciate it!
Hope you are all well. I've been following a few of you on Facebook and it looks like everyone is busy busy busy!
My favorite place to stay in the world is the Desert Pearl Inn in Springdale, Utah, right at the entrance of Zion.
http://www.desertpearl.com/
Its a bit pricey in season, but well worth the splurge. If its too pricey, the next best place is the Best Western Zion Park Inn.

been looking to try and rent lenses but having a hard time.
My friend told me that you can insure rentals but i cannot figure out what it is called... Insurance people dont know what its called when i asked them and called tempe camera which just was like talking to blind folks as taped to their rentals counters says "Deposit, insurance, and credit card"....
So my question is does anyone know the name to insure rentals? Been looking but all i can find is "All-Risk Personal Article floater" onto your homeowner's/renter's insurance policy but is mainly for only your own gear...
Thank you.

You could also call your homeowners insurance company and tell them what you want to do and see what they will cover.

Thanks Brian :) he was pretty easy to work with. The challenge was poses... what the heck do you do wit ha guy. LOL It was different ... didn't want to put him in a feminine pose.
Thanks again.

Had the most awesome newborn shoot today. This little precious is only 5 days old, and without a doubt has been the easiest newborn I've ever photographed. She never wimpered, or gave any fuss. She didn't pee on me, which is always a plus. Best of all, when it was all done, her mom let me take her home!
Okay, so here is my 5 day old daughter: Hailey Elizabeth
Beautiful. Congrats.

I was away from the computer for a few days and missed out on some quality "ribbing" here so I gotta play catch-up.
Here we go . . .
OK, wait - let me see if I got this correct - Brian mentions he is having a hard time getting people into his studio for photography sessions and comments about the "mom-a-razzi" at the zoo and difficulties making money in this business . . .
Brian, this is your solution?
go into your mad-scientist lab and create clients from scratch?
Wow, talk about desperate measures!
Kidding, :):):)
Those images are fantastic Brian, and congratulations on your new baby girl.
OK, back to the ribbing . . .
So Brian, what do you have now, like 17 kids? are you still waiting for the reality show hook-up?
Who's next?
Taunt, you know how they have those cartoon characters at amusement park rides that say "you must be this tall to ride this ride?"
For you, life is just one long series of those signs, each one with a different requirement of something you don't have . . .
"You must have long-pants to ride this ride"
"You must have a credit card to ride this ride"
but who am I to give life advice to anyone :) :) :)
Next
Frank,
It's good to see that I'm not the only one who struggles with posing models, and of course that is why I suggested we have a lighting/posing workshop . . .
I like the same images Brian likes, and for the same reasons . . .
Nice clean work, I wish I could get my portraits to look that nice . . .
color me jealous of your portrait work.

Really nice of you to say Doug. No real secrets here... just find nice light... covered shade... or put a diffusion panel over the top. Meter the background... bring the the subject up in exposure with the light or reflector. I try to expose the person a little brighter than the ambient light or I will drop the ambient a little so that they standout more in the scene.
It's getting hot quick... by 11 yesterday... we were hot.. and finished with the shoot.
Posing.... I still find it a nightmare... and throw a guy in the mix... just showed me yesterday... I really need to study up on guy poses. Girls are easy to work with... posing wise.
Good times!

I agree about how it makes other photographers look.
I hate being asked to leave when doing a shoot but normally people are cool. Just reciently i was shooting at a spot that was closed off (A closed dead end road) and a cop drove to us, asked what we were doing, once he knew, just said have a good day and left.

This white paper is making its way around the net. The other day someone asked me about optimizing PS I had a few answers but this is straight from Adobe via Jack Nack.
19 tips from Adobe on how to optimize Photoshops performance.
Lots of great info.
Photoshop CS5 running in 32-bit mode, the program can only directly access up to 2.1GB of RAM for Mac or 3GB for Windows—even if more is installed. In contrast, on 64-bit systems with compatible 64-bit hardware, Photoshop CS5 can directly access as much RAM as is installed on your system. Here's the link to the post I put together... if you are thinking about upgrading to CS5... have a look at the video. I made the leap from CS3 to CS5 and just the content aware tool alone has paid for the upgrade.

And you would be correct but civie flight sims are still only about a 50/50 split between CPU and GPU. There are just about the same cycles devoted to the flying physics (CPU) as there are cycles devoted to "pretty pictures" (GPU)
Even with my current rig (Dual Core + 512Mb ATI), I can pull 20fps at moderately high detail settings in MSFS-X. The new box should be able to grind out 30+ (if not higher) with every slider maxed out! Even the ballsiest machines bog a little over somewhere like NYC with all the details cranked up and things like moving traffic enabled and water details maxed.
The new machine really is intended to make my workflow more efficient. Any gains in other areas will be a nice bonus.

Now Premiere CS5 on the other hand, you pretty much have to have a card that has 1GB of video ram or more.
