none that I could find. In the pdf they have... there was an official photographer... but.. I think it was more about the advertising. There were 4 of us there shooting... not a lot of shooters.
Great shots, wish i had known there would be dock dogs, we would have gone too! thanks.. it was pretty cool.
Great shots Frank. The dog refusing to jump is hilarious. Many thanks. She had him/her up there for about 5 min trying to get him/her to jump in after the ball. Wasn't happening. LOL

Excellent work Frank. I like how you dealt with the challenging lighting conditions and distracting backgrounds. I've shot in there with "All" the lights at full-tilt and it's not easy, never mind with all the lights dimmed for a "pet" event.
Once again, nice work.

Many thanks! The last time I shot there was with the 20D... so... being able to take advantage of the higher ISO's with the 5D2 made a huge difference. The AF tracking is weak to say the least.. but.. I did the best with what I had. I appreciate the comments. Glad you enjoyed the images.

Kinda funny.... shooting on location in the desert... I've been stuck by cactus a few times when shooting flowers... and the wind-blown lightstands... Steve, Hatch and I should have done a video from the Papago Park Hole in the wall a few years back.. it was pretty comical.

Playing with photos and words again.... I'm kind of sappy sometimes...
I'm making a book for my cousin in the hospital. She's been in there for months, with no signs of leaving anytime soon... so anyway, I photographed these flowers by the window today.. what do you think of the texture? good or bad?
I would love to pick up some of the Flora-Bella stuf sometime, but I can't rationalize it at the moment.... so I landed here..

Whatever happened to your cousin must be pretty bad to be laid up for so long.
I hope she recovers well however long it takes

Thanks for the kind words guys....
Jay, I don't think there is anything warm and fuzzy about flying metal... well, maybe except for the feeling you get when it's published in some amazing book, or magazine... and when people actually purchase it to decorate their homes... That's super warm and fuzzy! ;)
Even so.... you manage to capture an audience that otherwise would be uninterested (aka warm fuzzy female types.... lol). Really love the second shot! Amazing as always.
Happy Wednesday! Double Ad day at Sprouts for anyone needing some fresh fruits and veggies. ;)

Yes and Yes :) Built very well... couldn't tell the difference between the Canon version and the Zeikos I have. Does a great job for me.
This is the one I bought. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/650550-REG/Zeikos_ZE_CBG5DII_ZE_CBG5DII_Power_Battery_Grip.ht ml/BI/7919/KBID/8427)

OK, I figured some people might not get the connection (Kodachrome, Film, this being a photography forum, cameras . . . Hello, is this thing on?, is anyone out there).
I guess I am the only one here that is old as dirt . . .
And I was worried that 1973 might not be old enough, or maybe Paul Simon might not be as well known as some other artists so I thought I would pull out all the stops with some original Beatles, Apple Records Beatles, the "Let it be" album with producer credit to Phil Spector . . .
Sorry, I didn't mean to show a picture of something that is so strange no one would know what it is.
Must be Fri. the 13th and everyone is hiding under their desks hoping that Freddy Kruger isn't out looking for them . . .

I've had a grip on all my cameras. Having to not throw you elbow up in the air to shoot portraits is a nice thing. With the controls on the grip it makes adjusting the camera settings very easy. Most of all, for me... it balances out my lenses. Without a grip I felt like the camera was top heavy. Now.. not the case. And of course... the spare battery isn't a bad thing either.
Congrats on the new 5D2... great camera!

What's Kodachrome? What's the Beatles? What's a "Record"?
Above all, what was it like living in 1973? I thought anyone who could remember that time would be senile by now. ;)

Just an FYI, but if any of you ever have a commercial shoot, and need a licensing release for the clients unrestricted use of the images in their advertising, I've got a good one. This isn't a copyright release, but a licensing agreement so you would still retain the copyright.

Interesting post.
What’s the difference? The 1.2L gives you some extra light if you’re shooting in the dark. It will also give you a dof a millimeter thin if that’s what you’re looking for. I’ve never had a need for either. At ISO 1600 or 3200 shooting at f2.0 on my 85mm f1.8 gives me everything I need, even when shooting a dark reception.
It meets his needs... and the 85L meets mine. It's worth the extra $ to me....to each his own :)

Nothin' new here really. Shot some F/A-18A Hornets out at Willie this afternoon. The old 100-400 isn't quite as snappy as the 500 but I didn't feel like dragging the "beast" out with me so...

This is VFA-204 "River Rattlers" from NAS Joint Reserve Base New Orleans. They had their CoNA (Centennial of Naval Aviation) bird with them as well.
Not as sharp as the first two. You don't realize what the f/4 aperture of the 500 does for you until you realize that it's two stops faster than the sweet spot of the 1-4 and you could have been at 1/2000 instead of 1/750.

If one didn't have a 500 to do direct side by side comparisons, I don't think the difference would be quite as dramatic. I know I didn't pan the 3rd jet as smoothly as the first two though.

I think we have to face facts and that the reality is moving towards a digital only format. People want to be able to carry around images on cell phones/iPods/iPads, etc, and share them instantly on FB rather than get prints. Not ALL clients are like that, but the demand is definately increasing.
Of course, the common logic that goes with that is that since we aren't having anything printed/shipped/packaged, it should be cheaper, shouldn't it? Which means that a photographer is never going to make money doing that unless they have some non-standard pricing.
Do I do it? Yup. not high res, of course. I only for images that the client purchased as a print first, or when they buy a package. I would never do it as an A' La' Carte item, unless it was getting the same returns as a print sale. I've also determined that I will never transfer copyright, EVER. I'll license the hell out of an image, but never give up the copyright.
What is really bugging me is the cheap-skate commercial requests I had been getting. One was for a multi-billion dollar company which wanted me to "volunteer" my time to cover their charity event. I figued it might be some good exposure, but when I got their contract there was no way in hell I would sign it. It demanded that I not only give them the copyright, but they were the sole and exclusive owner of the use of images. I couldn't even get them to license them back to me to use for self-promotion. I could also never even disclose to ANYBODY that I had been involved with the project, asked to be part of the project, knew about the project, or that I had ever signed a contract. So, I wouldn't get paid, wouldn't get any promotional advantage, or even mention I did some charity event. I told them to go get bent. (nicely of course)
The latest commercial request was a guy who is a small biz owner who wanted some product shots for his website. He offered me $20 to drive out to Maricopa, shoot his products, and give him the copyright. He figured that since I was just shooting them on a white background, and doing it all digitally, it would be easy. $20 wouldn't even cover my gas to get there. I told him to search on CL.

I agree about digital and i also think digital is harder to market as you have to show you have your own style and not the same as others which is extremely difficult now days unlike film as there is so much to do and its like $4 a photo just taking it so you have to do good as quickly as possible and then process it and what not for the clients. Then you scan them because they are not digital etc etc etc blah. Anyhow my point is since digital is so cheap now days just costs a lot of our time and knowledge people think its simple to do and don't want to pay so much because they think a friend with a pns will get the same photo no problem (not saying they cant but rarely will they have a friend who knows how to use the camera that way and all that).
I hope i made sense. Im tired as heck from my car. Goodnight everyoneZZZZzzzzz.......z

When push comes to shove, POTN is a perfect example of where the world is at.

I'm referring to those who really are "experten" in a given field and have authored the lion's share of the stickies. Many of them could easily be published and contain as much or more info than a lot of what I see on the shelves at Borders.
René Demkot's knowledge of colorspace theory, TMR Design (Robert?) and his knowledge of lighting equipment, "Ben's Newbie Guide To Photography," Skip D's tome on perspective control and on and on...

Been busy planning my youngest's 7th birthday party... among other things... Last night I had 16 energized children running around my house! A little crazy, but fun. She wanted a "Disco" party, so we did the whole retro thing with a disco ball and music, blah blah blah...
Few pics of the birthday girl.. Darn it if I don't know how to use my flash in a low-light situation... :(
Posing before her friends arrived.... (and yes I know she has a string coming out of her dress, darn it. I was really rushing for time.) Flash just pointed behind me and bounced.

Hi everyone. :) How's everyone doing? I've seen a lot of great shots coming through here. Glad everyone is keeping busy.
I just got back from hiking Havasupai (Havasu Falls, Mooney Falls, etc.) and then took a quick stop at the South Rim on the way home to SLC.
Here's one shot that I've edited so far...
First it was normal...

Then, there was a rainbow. ;) Haha.

Thanks Jay. Congrats on being picked for photo of the month (It was that, wasn't it?), BTW.
No. I went with a couple friends from up here in SLC. I was supposed to meet with some friends from down in Tucson... but they all bailed last minute.

It was photo of the year but who's counting...
So you didn't meet Connor Surdi on your trip? I swear he's posting nearly the exact same images you did.

I think Hatch had the 85mm f/1.4 Sigma...
And IIRC, he wasn't impressed.

Correct... erratic focusing issues.. sent it back to B&H... picked up the 85L... love the 85L.
Some shots I've seen from the Sig 85 have been outstanding... I just didn't want to play the Sigma lottery in hopes of getting a good copy.
:)
