Thank you guys for those tips! We're actually supposed to be going to the new orang-hutan exhibit to get some good shots going. I'm trying to see if we can cover up the other side glass panel to help eliminate the reflections. this should be going on around noon on saturday if any of you members want to see if you can get a clear view of them then. :-P but I can try and confirm if we do that or not if anyone plans on going to the zoo around then.

@Kristy - that plum image is great.

@azbojo22 - very nice, I really like #5 - giving his thumbs up lol

@Micheal O - that first one looks dark under my screen as well

Are any of you using the Black Rapid camera strap or any other type of quick release or camera strap system that holds the camera to your side and upside down via the tripod mount slot? I've been doing a ton of shooting with 2 cameras at once lately and i'm really getting tired of having both of them around my neck, one camera strap always gets in the way of the other or i'm strangling myself. I have one camera strap longer then the other and I hate it. I was looking into the black rapid system and getting the dual harness so i can easily hold and shoot with 2 cameras...

Carolinas (12 & Mohave) is always good and great tortillas! - not too sketchy and only open during lunch!

She is soooooo cute! :) Hope she is feeling well with the pregnancy.

Here is a quick shot from yesterdays wedding up at Trilogy Golf Cub at Vistancia. Man it was hot outside. I hate June weddings.

Pretty... :)

Sam and I have been going back n forth on a sports action shoot for awhile... now its a bit too hot to shoot trail running in the mountains around here... good luck! let me know if you need an asst (sorry Kristy)

:( So easliy disposed.... watch your back mister... lol.. ;)

Spent the evening with my 5D at TBP, sunset and people watching.

I think more people got a kick out of me... the hipster-dressed white dude in wayfarers and jesus sandals walking around with 2K in camera equipment :D

lol.. I really like the warmth of the first shot...

Thanks Frank for remembering it was me and that I published through MagCloud, but I would have preferred if you would have posted a link to MY magazine and not just the MagCloud home page.

Here is my magazine, Another View Photography (http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/176360)

FYI, I used inDesign to layout the magazine and exported a print-ready PDF from that for the printing by MagCloud.

Once again, MY magazine is here (http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/176360)

Make sure to purchase several copies of the first issue as the sales will help fund the second issue and third, etc.

Thank you. I wanted to try and get some original natural shots of the falls.

I was surprised at how much it had changed since the flood. I also hiked it in 2007 and when I was down there last month... it blew me away at how different it was. Still beautiful obviously, but totally different.

I'm liking the blur-motion falls images, those have a sur-real quality to them, get it Sur-Real . . .

Some things were easier to take pictures of than others. Taking pictures of framed artwork can be a bit of a challenge with direct on camera flash and nothing to bounce the flash off.

>04
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2410/5824818319_70fcfc1c31_b.jpg

There were lots of fantastic artists with all styles of illustration showing their stuff.

JUST THREE?! Awesome shots. I've been there pre and post flood and got a few comparison shots at (now dry) Navajo Falls. that was our favorite swiming area...

Has access improved to the 'upper new falls'? I tried to get in there via the creek but the formations were very soft so I stopped so as not to destroy anything.

The flood diverted the creek several hundred yards to the east, it scoured a new 'valley' around the flow of what used to be Navajo falls, which is now a dry dustbowl.

In this shot, you can see how much earth was displaced... the scar above my Bro-in-law is what was the the upstream side of Navajo Falls

On the one at 449 if you click email me a better price they will email you an offer of $250 - 200 rebate = $50.

The link I provided is directly to the offer they email you. Same product. Just they cannot publish that price on their website without you inquiring. It has to do with the Manufacturer's Suggested Price or something like that.

This is on Slickdeals, the SD effect will drive these out of stock pretty soon.

JUST THREE?! Awesome shots. I've been there pre and post flood and got a few comparison shots at (now dry) Navajo Falls. that was our favorite swiming area...
Yeah, just three. Haha. I took more... but didn't really care for them (at the time of processing). I might go back and look at some of them, dunno though.

Has access improved to the 'upper new falls'? I tried to get in there via the creek but the formations were very soft so I stopped so as not to destroy anything.
It's still pretty much impossible. I tried, but the water is WAY deeper than it looks, I was next to the edge and it was already up to my waist. So, I couldn't only get crappy shots of the new Navajo falls. And yeah, those formations... extremely soft. My tripod wouldn't even hold on them very well. Couple more years and they should be good. Haha.

Nice shots as well. :)

I'm not at all happy with my shots so far, and I'm wondering if my 400mm F/5.6 may not be doing its job as it has in the past.

I'll post pics later.

I only have one strobe, and the lighting in the offices is fluorescent ceiling bulbs.

Wow I never know they had an option to email better price. Thats pretty awesome! I'll have to try that everytime before I make a purchase moving forward on their website. Thanks for the tip.

HDR? Or, don't use the strobe. You'll then have 3 different types of lighting... which is never fun to try and correct. I did a few real-estate shots (I sucked horribly), and just ended up doing HDR. Haha. I know it's cheating, but when you only have one strobe, can't do it in the evening/morning... makes things tough.

I like this one. I wish I could get my 24-70 to be that sharp. (on a crop sensor the DoF on that lens can take some getting used to)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I wanted to try that whole "take pictures of the moon" thing . . .

So I set up my gear inside where it is light and head out into the backyard to get a meter reading and point the camera up at the moon (hand-held with a 250 shutter speed set and IS turned off in preparation for mounting on a tripod) and guess what happens . . .

A big jet plane flies right in front of the moon and I'm hand-held with too slow a shutter speed and IS turned off to get a good capture. I'm also not thinking; get my breathing and stance right to make it work, I'm just trying to check my meter settings, also I have "mirror lock up" set so it takes two presses of the shutter to get a frame . . .

But I pressed anyway.

I figured that wasn't going to happen again for a few hours if at all and depending on the air traffic patterns I could be waiting there all night for the next plane so I just moved on to tripod and live view focusing for my moon shots.

Not the best, but a fun and interesting little experiment.

We're heading out there at 3 tomorrow, but I'm probably not going to be doing any full set-up photoshoot style stuff, since all the spots we're gonna hit are busts and we'll be kicked out within 20-30 minutes of arrival, if that. If you want, I can set up a shoot with some buddies at a non-bust spot or a skatepark on wednesday night at around 7pm if that works for you? Bring a PW and you can use my flashezzz. I'm going to be in socal for the weekend starting Thursday afternoon, but I'm sure we could also set somethin' up next week? Whatever you wanna do man, just say the words!

I have a dentist appt. tomorrow afternoon at 3 so I guess I'll miss tomorrow's session. (Dentist, how fun is that?)

I have a 580EX II but no PW, but I can trigger line of sight or just shoot ambient light and work with what mother nature provides. I like the bowls at PV better than Scottsdale, but I think you have to pay to skate there. Not sure. I have more of a background in pool/park stuff than street, but it could be fun to just take a bicycle and a board around for some urban-assault, run and gun type of stuff . . .

I'm open for anything short of getting arrested

Yeah PV has the whole ID card system that you've got to apply for and everything. Kind of a PITA. I used to shoot at the N. Scottsdale park often and have starting skating there on a frequent basis again recently... usually not too crowded. Although the street spots look nicer and are the only thing run in the mags, there is nothing more disappointing than driving down to a spot, hopping the fence, setting everything up and get settled, and then get kicked out / cops called after two tries. Needless to say... park stuff is probably a better idea?

I can always try to find an optical slave I've got hiding somewhere, and you can use a PW of mine. Or switch off? We'll figure something out. Lookin' forward to it... it's been awhile since I've dual-shot with someone!

Don't have anything from DTPHX... the one spot we were actually going to set up and shoot at we were met by a gang of homies literally smoking crack cocaine. They started taggin' up the building we were at when a cop rolled by that they didn't see. I let 'em know what was up, and they high fived us all and left. And then the cop came and kicked us out, as opposed to going after the real ass holes. Whatever, we shredded all over Tempe and Downtown, literally just cruised around spots downtown going from spot to spot getting kicked out of em, ride around for a bit, come back, get kicked out again, hitting tons of stuff. What a great go skate day.

Here's a few of the earlier shots.

Doug--I've got a buddy that wants to shoot a trick in downtown Phoenix next week, basically just west of the Chase Field parking garage. It has the potential to be a bust (we were kicked out of there after 30 minutes... didn't even get to skate because of the run-in with that gang) and it's in a pretty sketchy area, but if you're down, I'm gonna be shooting that. We can still do a skatepark shoot if you'd like, too.

I will be there (downtown at Chase Field) on Wed. the 29th, but I have to be walking in the building at around 10:30 in the morning.

How far West of the parking garage? Why is it sketchy there? is it only sketchy there at night?

During the day, and during the day when there is a baseball game the place is crawling with police.

This is going to sound like an up-tight old man, but:

If there are signs posted that say "no skateboarding" or you are damaging property in any way, you won't be doing yourself or the sport any favors by doing that sort of thing.

I would say it would be in your best interest to not go out looking for places or situations that will get you into trouble.

If you want to jump an iconic staircase and grab one or two shots and move on, I'm OK with that, but if you want to try and session some spot with crack houses, gangs or the front of the Federal Court House, just for the "thrill" of running from the cops . . .

Well, I think those kind of things are what has given skateboarding a bad reputation and you should avoid those kind of activities.

That is just my opinion.

I'm all for the "Skateboarding is Not a Crime" deal, but if you go out and do stuff that make people dislike skateboarders . . .

well that just makes a bad situation worse.

Now if you want to set up a shot where a guy ollie's off a second story balcony, over a moving light rail train, onto the top of a moving flat-bed truck and finishes the trick with a nice long nose wheelie in front of Chase Field . . .

Well that's a different story.

great thoughts... you could insert "photography" for skateboarding througout and it carries almost the same meaning in these modern times of "Terrorist Photographers" :D:rolleyes:

I've been skating for 11 years, I stopped giving a **** about the no trespassing thing a long time ago. Now don't discredit me there; I'm not down with grinding the hell out of super nice places or even destroying parts of property. If something is nice looking or new or even well-kept... I have no interest in doing anything that could blemish it. I completely understand the argument that we're a bunch of idiots with no respect for authority or property -- many are like that. The spot I'm talking about is a loading dock at a long abandoned warehouse, that has a split tree between the end of the dock, over about a 4 foot gap, to the asphalt landing a few feet down. It's the old abandoned place between 3rd and 4th st just south of the train tracks. It's not fenced off, there's no extraordinary measures needed to get there. Look at it how you will, but to me, skating a spot like that actually gives the dilapidated building regarded as trash by all others a bit of a new life, as something completely different than what it was intended for. It's all tagged up by gangs, and naturally when people see skaters there they think "oh, those *******s really ruined the place", but really all we do is skate. There really is no thrill of running from the cops -- the few times I've done it, it's scary as ****. I've never been slapped with a ticket and don't plan on it. Neither me nor anybody in our crew have ever back-talked a security guard or police officer who has told us we can't skate at whatever spot we're at. There's always the argument that, with so many parks, why do we still skate street? There's just something about skating something in the world around you that wasn't designed for skateboarding. A stairset with 8 stairs and a slant ledge next to it is taken for granted and overlooked by the masses, but for us, finding something like that is awesome, especially if it's got a nice landing and not a bunch of cracks on the run up. It just makes it so much more challenging.

The place isn't too sketchy at all, the only reason I say that is because of our run-in with the vato's last time around. And it's not like we're there for hours, either. Set up for one or two tricks, and once they're stomped, pack up and leave. Maybe a 30 minute to an hour process.

Quite honestly, I'm shocked that you even have interest in it. Many people, including other photographers, tend to discount what we do as skate photogs because of the general distaste for any type of skateboarding that happens outside of the X-Games. I'm stoked because like I said, I've never had anyone (besides other skaters getting into photography) interested in joining me and giving it a go. Don't worry -- it's not a bad thing, and me and my buddies are all super nice, drug-free kids. We won't bite! They're all good kids from North Scottsdale haha.

I'm free all next week so I'll have to check with Conner when he wants to hit it up, but it will most likely be around 6 PM so things have died down a bit as far as business traffic and definitely on a baseball-free day. If you want in on it, basically a real street shoot, you're more than welcome. If not -- I completely understand. We can decide on a time to head to a park and I can have my buddies come and throw down a few tricks.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against skateboarding or kids or adults that skate. I don't automatically assume that a kid with a skateboard is a bad kid, or out to break the law.

Over time skateboarding and skater's have gotten a bad reputation as law-breaking punks that don't care about anything but that next tasty wave (a carry over from 60's surf culture).

I think the spot you mentioned with the split tree looks dirty and is a bit ugly with all the trash and stuff. I totally get the appeal of abandon buildings, but a brick wall with graffiti beats chainlink fencing everytime.

Also, I believe iconic backgrounds beats crazy-hard tricks everytime. A picture of a guy doing a simple trick in Moscow's Red Square beats a crazy-hard trick in some back alley. At least that is my opinion.

Old school scanned from 35mm film college photography class stuff with lots of grain and scratches.

I spy PV park in the first pic.

And yeah, the spot is a bit gross, it's the skate photographer's job to make something good out of it. I don't dictate where we skate or the photogenic-ness of the spots... I go where we skate and make the best out of whatever I can do there.

Today I did a 500 mile loop on the Busa, covering an air show in Valle, Az. (got to see Jay and some other aviation photogs), the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona, Jerome, Prescott and home in Wickenburg.

It was hotter than hell in the Sedona/Jerome area. I had to make three stops in less than 40 miles for water.

I was at Epiphany Studios (http://www.epiphanyphotostudios.com) in Tempe today (did a shoot with my son and his wife) and a lady from work.
I wanted to try lighting using two strip boxes with grids (rim lighting) and a White Lighting 1600 with 40 degree grid for fill. The Strip boxes are the main lights and the WL 1600 is the fill light.

Then processed the image using Calvin Hollywood's technique from Kelby Training.

Can't be that shocking. I have an interest as well and i really give credit to those doing stills and videos of the skaters because of the complexity that they have to do all the shoots. quite a bit are already skaters themselves and will do video while riding along the side of the subjects. i love watching those videos in like the vans stores of the skaters riding along the streets doing tricks here and there.

I get about 180 miles before the low fuel light comes on. I get a solid 40 MPG and it's a five gallon tank. I usually pay attention to my fuel and top off at about 160 miles on average. I don't like running low.

Now, my KTM gets closer to 50 MPG and that has a 6 1/2 gallon tank. I can knock out some miles before stopping on that bike. Problem is, it has no fuel gauge, just a low fuel warning light. When it comes on, you are most likely going to get another 15 miles and that's it. I set my trip meter when I fill up and watch that to make sure I don't get too low.

On this trip, I went light on gear, taking just my 7D with the 70/200 and my 10-22 EFS. I tossed them in the tank bag, which meant little room for water. I carried a 1/2 liter bottle in one of the tank bag side pockets and a ball cap in the other.

I have a very nice Tamrac hugeass backpack, which I really like. The only problem is that the damn cameras and glass are heavy. I wouldn't want to wear that thing on a 500 mile ride.

You get used to it. It just a matter of knocking out tons of miles. It's funny. When you have been traveling at 80 MPH or more all day, 55 feels like you are hardly moving.

My Versys gets right at 50MPG, it has a digital bar gas readout, last time I took it to flashing "Fuel" warning, I filled up at 220miles. It has the same engine as the 650R Ninja, so it has some get up and go, but with the upright seating and my large torso, I catch a lot of wind... :D

I can carry the camera bags in my hard luggage bags. as for keeping cool, I carry a small spritzer bottle to wet the jacket down periodically. I can also carry a frozen or ice filled baldder in the back pouch of my jacket...

nice. my bike gets about 40 mpg but I usually fill up around 3 gal so at around 120 miles I will get the low fuel light which I think leaves me around a half gallon left so I estimate within 20 miles to get gas. Wish it took more gas cause I would love the ride a little longer but I guess since I'm leaning quite forward I need those breaks from riding. Just an inconvenience since I work about 25 miles from home so I have to fill up after the second day of riding to and from work.

Oh, and my speedo isn't correct, or at least it can't be since I don't believe everyone is going 89 mph with me :-D

Oh, and my speedo isn't correct, or at least it can't be since I don't believe everyone is going 89 mph with me :-D

Motorcycle speedos are notoriously underaccurate.

That aside, we need to plan a ride soon. All the moto guys. Let's do a run up to Sedona or on to Flag.

Start super early while still cool, and be up in the high country all day where it is not so hot. We can figure out picture places prior.

I use the Zumo for speed on my bike, the speedo is 8-10% over.

It's about the same on my Busa. They motorcycle manufacturers must think they are saving lives with this big lie, or something.

(edit) Great shot Michael. Love the lighting.

I think it is just a Marketing tool to make us riders feel good about our bikes. In 50 years of experience my speedometers have been notoriously optimistic for the most part.

I must say though, independent testing on '96 VFR705F gave a top speed of 143 which I achieved (bike speedo) on my bike once on a cool evening and a long straight. Let's just say it went fast enough to scare the bejezus out of me once.

Rode to TN in 2009 with a friend on another bike. I kept the speed on the Zumo @ 75-78 in 75 mph areas. The first time we stopped for fuel, he asked me if I knew we were doing 85 mph!

Meanwhile, that last shot is gorgeous.

It's been a bit on the warm side down here in Phoenix so my wife and I decided to get out of town for some cooler temps.

Thanks guys. It's just Flagstaff, about 86 to 89 degrees, but much cooler than 116 to 118 degrees down here on the surface of the sun . . . ahh I mean Phoenix.

Not as hot as Michael O's models/images!!:lol:

Thanks... Yep Chicago.. I made the best of booking my flight a day early.

Great time lapse too. Very well done..

I've been experimenting a bit with time lapse movies here at work with the G12. So far I'm happy with the results.
